Summary

A girl grapples with the pain of feeling different and unwanted, finding solace in her imagination to transcend her harsh reality.

Abstract

The poem "To Fly Above" depicts a young girl's struggle with emotional isolation, which is compounded by the indifference of her peers and a caregiver who fails to provide the support she needs. Despite the darkness that surrounds her, she refrains from engaging in childhood games and is perceived as serious beyond her years. The girl's experiences of being excluded and the target of hurtful behavior lead her to seek refuge in her imagination. Here, she learns to harness her creativity not only for escape but as a tool for survival, ultimately allowing her to rise above her circumstances.

Opinions

  • The girl feels weighed down by her circumstances, which contrast with her desire to be free and happy.
  • The author suggests that the girl's maturity and seriousness are a result of her having to deal with adult-like emotional burdens at a young age.
  • There is a sense of betrayal by someone who should be a source of care and support for the girl, contributing to her feelings of abandonment.
  • The poem reflects on the harsh realities of growing up feeling different and the resilience required to overcome such challenges.
  • The girl's imagination is portrayed as a vital sanctuary and a means for transforming her dreams into a mechanism for empowerment and escape from her troubles.

like the sun life giving orb going dark or born into the darkness of a darkened heart made that way or gone that way unknown she bypasses hopscotch courts looking longingly at lighthearted children unburdened by pretend face and public lies with private betrayals abandoned to chance never wont to skip rarely even to run serious beyond years or countenance of childhood she walks on past small clusters of laughs behind hands and comments behind back touched off by example of one who should care but doesn’t — not really mysteries of lacking of being wrongly different chase her through schoolyards and playgrounds children’s parties as forced invite and empty birthday celebrations where no one shows up her only freedom found lay within imagination and needed skill learned for sustenance and survival to change her nightdreams to benefit in order to rise above and fly
