To Dead Dreams

I had a strange dream. I was living an entirely different life. I had followed a different path. I was tasting a life I had always wanted. It was a success. This dream illustrated what my life could have been.

What could have been, because it was just a dream. The awakening was rough. When you emerge from a perfect dream, the first embrace of reality is a nightmare.

A strange mood, as if the night had taken advantage of its darkness to cast an evil spell on you. As I ate my breakfast, conflicting feelings ran through my mind.

This dream is destined to remain a pipe dream. Unrealizable today. I touched it in my sleep, but like last night, it’s gone forever.

Some might say:

“Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

But after a certain age, some dreams fade away. Like a star, we can still see their light in the sky, but it’s only an illusion. They died a long time ago.

Some dreams come with a deadline, and once we’ve hit a certain point in our lives, they’re out of reach, forever.

I regret that no one ever told me that a dream can die. And even if someone had, would I have believed them?

It’s the kind of experience you can only live on your own.

The discovery of a terrifying thought. You only have one life, and you won’t be able to achieve everything you want to.

Is there a cure for that? Yeah. Maybe. Maybe Not.

If there is one, it would be to keep dreaming and finding new ones to realize. Just because one dream has been extinguished doesn’t mean we can’t ignite others. That way, we don’t get stuck in an unfulfilled past. The future continues to represent hope, not regret.

Even so, there’s still mourning to be done. The mourning of those versions of you that will never exist. And the older you get, the more these versions multiply.

This dream was a reminder. That as life goes on, the field of possibilities narrows. We have very short windows to realize some of our visions.

Some will read this post and feel pessimism. It’s exactly the opposite. If some of our dreams are dead, then we must do everything in our power not to let those who are still alive die.

The graveyard of dreams must not be fleshed out any further. We have to use the pain of losing some to make sure we give enough energy to the new ones.

It’s an invitation to do more. To dare. To try. Not to give up on any of our current dreams.

Today is not a day of grief. But of celebration. Dead dreams are dead. There’s no point in mourning them. Sadness and sorrow must be transformed into hope.

We can imagine new ones. We can touch new ones. They are also in danger. So we’ve got to get moving, and fast. To avoid the risk of feeling the weight of regret, once again.

Have a great week.
