Summary

The article discusses the impracticality of changing handbags to match daily outfits, emphasizing the time-consuming nature of coordinating accessories with clothing.

Abstract

The author reflects on a recent fashion article suggesting that selecting a daily outfit with a matching handbag can save time. However, the author argues that this practice is actually time-consuming, as it involves transferring all the contents from one handbag to another, including various personal items and even tools like screwdrivers. The author prioritizes practicality over fashion, admitting to carrying a raspberry-hued handbag with an orange skirt due to time constraints, and implies that fashion journalists may not always consider the real-life implications of their advice.

Opinions

  • The author believes that changing handbags to match each day's outfit is not a time-saving strategy.
  • The process of switching handbags is seen as cumbersome due to the need to transfer personal items and tools.
  • The author values practicality over strict adherence to fashion coordination, suggesting a willingness to commit a "sartorial crime" by mismatching accessories for the sake of efficiency.
  • There is a hint of skepticism towards fashion journalists who may overlook the practical aspects of their fashion advice.

To change or not to change?

The handbag dilemma

I recently read an article on the fashion pages about saving time by picking out an outfit for each day of the week in advance.

Admittedly, fashion journalists are always on the hunt for a different angle, and the article was lavishly illustrated. A different handbag accompanied each day’s choice of outfit.

Timesaving? No way! A woman journalist must surely know the time it takes to change handbags. You unzip and empty the pockets of the first bag, accumulating a pile of ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ on the table. Useful objects like screwdrivers, temporarily stored in the bag, must be returned to their rightful place before you repack the second bag.

For me, practicality rules. So if you see me around wearing an orange skirt but carrying a raspberry-hued handbag, forgive the sartorial crime. I simply didn’t have time to co-ordinate my wardrobe today.
