To be Your Own Boss is not for Everyone
The truth about working for yourself and creating a business
“The majority of ordinary people lack fulfilment and peace of mind because their values are confused and internally conflicted. We waste our lives chasing after an illusion of Happiness, based on a mixture of hedonism, materialism and egotism — crazy, self-defeating values absorbed from the foolish world around us.” — by Donald Robertson in his book Stoicism and the Art of Happiness.
Everyone now wants to create another Facebook and Google. Everyone wants to be famous. Children go to school and their aspirations are to become famous and rich. Is that what we want our next generation to be? What happened to smart, intelligent, learned and educated?
Those who want to be the next Facebook and Google want to have their company and be their own boss. They want to be the next ‘big thing’. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s great! Ambition and creativity for the ‘the right thing’ are always admirable. As Seneca puts it:
“Fate leads the willing and drags along the reluctant”
If you are the one who wants to create something amazing — that’s fantastic. However, nothing is easy. Rome wasn’t built in a day. There’s a lot of tests along the way. For example, if you are ready to face the following and not in the same order you might have a chance of surviving as a new business and who knows you might be the next Facebook or Google.
Working on your own
Working on your own may sound great at first. You are your own boss. You love doing your own hours. However, this enthusiasm will be beaten by tough reality. It’s hard. It’s tough. You are on your own 24/7. There’s no one to encourage you; there’s no one to put you down. There’s nothing. Only you and your big idea.
The enthusiasm of the first day working on your own wears off. You are being tested with patience, persistence and belief in yourself and your company/product. To make sales is going to be challenging particularly a first one. How do I know? I’m doing it. I’ve opened a new business in Barcelona. I love it. However, I don’t aspire to be the next Facebook and Google. I want to be my own “thing”.
I am in it for the beat not for ego, pride or anything else.
I want to bring some colours, life and beauty from the Old Silk Road to Europe. All the hardships along the way, for me, it’s an encouragement. That’s not to say I don’t have bad days. I do sometimes question myself more than one would guess.
Working on your own means you work a lot more than you used to. You will work day and night weekends, and evenings, and mornings. It does not stop. You really have to want it to be able to work this hard. The life of being your own boss will grind you every single day with no return for a long time (a year or so).
You’ve got to do your own Taxes
Everyone has to do taxes no matter the country they are in. I’ve lived in the UK for 15 years and I’ve always worked for the man. Taxes were sorted. Now, I live in Spain. I am a freelancer with my own business. The rules are you pay your own taxes which like anywhere else, right? Not only is there a language barrier but also a completely new tax system for me. My Spanish is good but not that good.
You’ve got to do it all on your own. Of course, there are services you can go to and they’ll do it for you. But where’s the fun in that?
You have to love the struggle.
You’ve got to enjoy the hard work, the nitty-gritty the stuff you never want to do you’ve got to because no one else will. You are your own boss with a new idea business now handle everything yourself. It’s the truth of working for yourself or at least you start making a profit and can employ people to do things for you.
You are going to save money like never before in your life. You’ll have to cut down on your favourite things. Now, because of coronavirus, it’s easier because we spend less on our favourite things or maybe not…?
Accept there will be no income for a whole year or more
When you set something new you have no idea how it’s going to work. I’ve set a new beautiful handmade carpet gallery in Barcelona. It’s called La Galeria del Califa. It’s covid-19 time and our target audience isn’t in Barcelona. I’ve set myself up in a way I know there will be no income for a while. Not until the economy, the world and tourism come back to normal.
You’ve got to take a risk out of the equation to be able to do this. Otherwise, you’ll fail in the first quarter. You’ve got to be ok not to earn money from your idea/business for a certain period and be ok with it. The patience is certainly tested. You’ve got to keep your cool otherwise it’s probably better to work for the man and not have these worries.
If you cannot handle the pressure and wait it out probably it’s better to work for the man and have peace of mind. You won’t have worries like that.
Always be ready to change and adapt
How many times I’ve improved my website? Countless! Things change. The economy changes so you’ve got to adapt and move forward. The feeling of nostalgia isn’t your friend. You’ve got to keep moving forward and creating. Everything is online now. Move your business online. Create stuff even if you don’t know how— learn!
I’ve got to create and learn a lot more about SEO, how it works, what it needs so my business is found online without paying ads. Challenging? Yes! The competition is fierce! The life of your business is not meant to be easy — it’s meant to test you and your ideas. Therefore, being able to adapt and change is crucial.
It’s important to keep your cool but the only way you can do it is by preparing yourself and taking away the risk mentioned earlier. Patience and persistence with the ability to continuously change will be your best friends. If you cannot handle it it’s best maybe not do it.
We live in a world where we want to be successful or be seen as successful. Today, success is very much discussed everywhere and by everyone. It’s easy to get a hint as to what real success is and means. There’s plenty of definition of success too, here’s one I found on Google:
“The accomplishment of an aim or purpose”
Simple right?! No. Now success is seen as having a big house somewhere in the sun. Success is something if you work 60 hours a week and party even harder. Work your ass off in a big corporate and become a manager, then a director, then a VP and so on.
I’d rather work on my own ‘thing’ and struggle than work for the man. I don’t want to be the next Google or Facebook — that’s not me. I want to have my own success and not be defined by the corporate culture as a success. I want to be my own success. I don’t want to be in the office and follow someone else’s rules, which most of the time make no sense. That’s just me.
Sometimes it’s just easier to work for the man and not have the headache, the struggle and ‘will it work’ all the time in your head. The corporate world is comfortable and is indeed cushy. Before setting out onto an adventure of creating a new business think twice and is really for you.
My enthusiasm hasn’t worn off because I don’t really like the corporate culture and what it does to your soul. I’d rather learn through struggle. Make my own way and learn. The path is not rosy but it is rosy to me because I am in it for the soul and it is much better than working for the man. Successful business life doesn’t have to be defined by the big city. It can be defined by your soul and what it gives to the world.
Love and Light!
