To Be Successful You Must Change Your Mindset
How to overcome your fear of failure and take action
Have you ever wanted to do something, but you just kept procrastinating?
Did you feel afraid to take that first step forward?
Or maybe, at some point, the work seemed so hard that you didn’t know where to start or how to handle it?
Or maybe you didn’t feel you were 100% ready for a particular job or project?
You know you need to take action, but your mind is always stopping you. Subconsciously, you are afraid to take that first step because you feel you might fail.
To take action, you must conquer your fear of failure.
A lot of times, the number one reason for procrastination is your fear of failure. You subconsciously think that your efforts at doing something will not lead to success. You feel you may not get the job done according to your standards or standards set upon you.
If you are a perfectionist, for example, you may feel that every effort you make in the process must lead to success. All the steps you take should be flawless. You allow no room for errors. You think that unless all the criteria are in place, you can’t do what you want to do.
Subconsciously, you are afraid of making a mistake. Your brain fools you into thinking that your efforts are not worthwhile and that you will fail.
This is however self-limited thinking. You need to break the barrier and set your mind free.
To help you overcome your feeling of failure, you need to do three things:
1) Set realistic expectations.
I know from my experience, if I set my goals too high, have too high of expectations, it can later backfire and lead to less effective results. Instead, you should set up realistic expectations.
In the past, I used to tackle too many projects at once — in the end, I was not impressed with my results. Also, if you set your bar too high and chase too many things, the fear of not reaching success with any of them will drag you down.
2) Take a little step at a time.
Start with small goals and build from there. Every little effort you make counts. Tackle each step at a time, and increase the expectations gradually. You don’t want to burn out and give up in the process.
Most often, one of the reasons we give up on projects is because we tackle too many things, too fast, and at the same time. This is because we overestimated our abilities from the start.
Instead, you should aim for more consistency and perseverance, rather than speed. Grow at a moderately steady pace and analyze every little step you take in the process.
3) Allow room for mistakes.
You have to say to yourself that making mistakes is part of the learning process. Growth cannot occur without mistakes, and we need to be consciously aware of them so we know how and where we can improve. Learning from your mistakes will lead to better growth.
“Many times what we perceive as an error or failure is actually a gift. And eventually, we find that lessons learned from that discouraging experience prove to be of great worth.”
Richelle E. Goodrich
Bottom line: If you change your thought process and allow yourself room for mistakes, chances are you’ll reach your target goals faster.
Remember, it all starts with the right mindset. If you do it right, you will succeed. Whatever you attempt to do, be bold, and do not be afraid to take the first step forward towards your dream.
If you feel you can’t, then it’s your brain playing tricks on you. Once you win the battle over the self-limiting thoughts, you will step on the path to success.
If you follow these tips and restructure your mindset accordingly, you’ll start seeing immediate results. Go ahead, and take that first little step. You can do this!
