Tips to Write on Medium
A rising tide lifts all boats

Our philosophy is “a rising tide lifts all boats”.
Here at Koinonia Publication, we are a unique group of writers who are Christian and want to share the Good News. We also want to encourage and empower our writers.
Tips to support your fellow writers
Clap
You can applaud up to 50 times — give generously. But you don’t have to give the same amount of claps all the time. Clap how you think you would clap at a performance. A little. A lot. A whole bunch. A standup performance.
If you wonder if you have clapped for our Koinonia writers — just go to our main page — you will see a list of posts. If you have clapped you will see green for the claps.
Follow
Those who write for Koinonia affirm the Apostle’s Creed so you can trust that their posts will be worth reading — so follow them. And consider following those that like and comment on your posts.
Respond
You can respond in a post on a specific word, line or paragraph. Or you can respond at the bottom of the story. Or better yet, respond all ways!
Respond to those who have responded to you. Check your notifications or go to your posts and check. When you respond, clap appropriately, and use tags at the bottom of your response.
Share
It’s never been easier to share writing on Twitter and Facebook. Just click the icons on the left of a post and share away. And did you know that you can share a specific word, line or paragraph within the story? Try it! Highlight what you like and use the icons that pop up.
Connection is a two-way street.
Tips for your own writing
Edit
Double, triple, quadruple check your work for typos and grammar. Use Grammarly.com as it catches most errors.
Image
It’s easy to add a photo to your posts. Follow these basic steps:

To add a photo you need to click on the symbol in the draft document. This option allows you to add an image, video, embed or new part.

Once you click on that, you click on the camera icon in the list of options. Choose your photo and it will be inserted.
Make sure you have permission to use all images. Credit below each image with appropriate reference. Some free images can be found at Unsplash.com and Pixabay.com. Give credit where credit is due. You owe it to your fellow creators.
Links
Don’t forget to set up Facebook and Twitter links in your Settings.

Profile
Readers want to know about you! Don’t forget to write a short bio in your profile (up to 160 characters) and you can even include a link to your blog/website or other social media site.
Quote
Another way to break up white space is by using quotes or images. Make your post interesting and readable. Highlight your quote and use the “quotation” marks.
Tags
Don’t forget to use tags in your posts. For Koinonia, we use Christianity, Creativity, Health, Relationships and Writing Tips. Also, use tags when you are commenting. Check out the top tags here.
Whitespace
Entice readers by using lots of white space. Make paragraphs short. Use the “T” or “t” when you highlight to break up many paragraphs of writing.
Write
We’d like to suggest that you consider applying to other publications to spread your work around Medium. Both Janis and I also write for others. I write for Every Child Matters, Faith Hacking, Not Alone, Publishous, Sugar-Free-Zone, The Dad Hammer Pub and The Startup. Janis writes for all these plus The Writer Cooperative, Art + Marketing, Creative Humans. There are many, many options! You can check out The Top 50 Medium Publications of 2018 for ideas on other publications that may be of interest to you. Each publication has its own process to apply as a writer (and some may not be accepting any more writers) so it’s up to you to research them individually.
Let’s make sure the Word gets out there!
