Tips of using and buying the Erhu Qianjin(二胡千斤使用和選購指南)

Hi, this is Sharon the erhu teacher. In this episode I am going to share my tips on using and buying the erhu qianjin.

Before we start, if you like my video, remember to click the thumbs up icon, hit the bell, subscribe to my channel and share my video with your friends.

Erhu players place the fingers between QianJin and the erhu bridge to emit sound in different pitches during the bowing. Hence, qianjin can determine the fingering position by the distance between the erhu bridge and it. The closer the qianjin positions to the pedal, the wider the fingers will stretch. And the hand and fingering positions are changed. So how do we decide its distance? You can place the arm on the soundbox and the position below the low segment of the little finger will be the position of qianjin. Then people will ask, how do we tie the qianjin on the strings? You can refer to the youtube link in the top right corner of the screen to understand the instructions of tying the qian jin. Usually we cut the qianjin in 2 meters long from the roll of qianjin to tie the qianjin on the strings.

Before tying the qianjin, you have to buy the suitable qianjin for your erhu. There are various qianjins made of different materials and I introduce 3 popular ones here. Most qianjins are made of cotton and nylon. The cotton qianjin is cheaper than nylon qianjin, while nylon qianjin is more long lasting than cotton ones, as nylon qianjins have waxy surfaces that are waterproof and not easily worn out. In addition, you may notice QQ qianjin, which is invented by erhu musician Gao Shao-qing(高韶青). It is made of plastic so it is durable and most importantly, more movable than other qianjins. With this movable qianjin, it is used to play various erhu music, without using other string instruments like Zhonghu(中胡) and Gaohu(高胡) to replace Erhu. For more information on QQ qianjins, you can refer to the information panel in the top right corner on the screen.

That’s all of my tips on using and buying erhu qianjin. You are welcome to ask me questions in the comment section below this video.
