1. Go barefoot

When was the last time you walked barefoot on a cool green lawn, or over a sandy beach, or let the water run over your toes in the ocean? The emotional impact of going barefoot is enormous. Whether it’s because something is freeing in feeling your toes digging in the sand or grass, or whether it’s because of the act of being barefoot grounds you somehow and connects you to the earth in a way that removes all barriers, you can’t deny the effects.

2. Get outside / Go for a walk

Getting out of the house and going for a walk (preferably with a friend or a dog) will reconnect you with nature. You can also take some time to sit under a tree and relax for a while. Sit on the ground, rest your back against the trunk and allow your worries to float away. Close your eyes and listen to the sound of the wind in the leaves or the birds singing.

Something as simple as getting out of doors for your lunch break is good for you. A walk in the park is better. But, half an hour of sunshine can improve your sense of well-being and boost your metabolism. It’s our primary source of Vitamin D, which you need for all kinds of healthy body functioning from your immune system to your bone density. Cognitive function is also boosted by Vitamin D. So, go and grab some sun!

3. Nurture your green thumb

Plants have been shown to help regulate the environment, both indoors and outdoors. If you don’t have a green thumb, it’s time to learn. There are plenty of tips available online for you to learn.

Gardening

Nothing beats getting your hands into the earth for connecting with nature. Gardening is a great way to step away from the stresses of modern life. It doesn’t matter if you have a conventional flower garden, a vegetable garden, or herbs in pots on a windowsill. Or you can volunteer with nature groups, or maybe there’s a friend or relative who would appreciate some help in the garden.

Houseplants

If you don’t have space for garden beds or a vegetable plot, get some houseplants to brighten your home and office. Even having an African violet or a Philodendron on your desk can help improve air quality and reduce your stress levels.

4. Practice nature mindfulness

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present observing one’s thoughts and feelings without judging them as good or bad.[1] It’s the perfect way to enhance your connection with nature. You probably walk past nature every day without even realizing it. Try looking around you to see what you’re missing. As you go about your day, really look for trees, flower beds, or planters while you’re walking down the street. Are there potted plants or trees in your office building’s reception area or your favorite coffee shop? Even the bunches of flowers at a florist stall are reminders of the natural world.

5. Look up!

Don’t just check your weather app or ask Alexa for the weather. Look out the window! Notice what types of clouds there are and the position of the sun.

6. Go on a hike

Hiking is a great way to reconnect with nature. For many people, they have hiking trails close to their homes. Even if you don’t, you should be able to find places to go. In major cities like New York City, there are places like Central Park. If you don’t mind traveling a bit, you can find areas outside the cities as well.

7. Take a camping trip

When was the last time you went camping? Camping is a lot of fun and can be a great trip to enjoy with the entire family. For the more adventurous types, try choosing a location that does not provide amenities like showers and bathrooms.

So, walk away from your computer, your tablet, or smartphone for a while and feel the benefits of reconnecting with nature.
