Tips For Dealing With Your Addictive Mind

5 emotional withdrawal symptoms

habits — Photo by Nubelson Fernandes on Unsplash

As a big fan of mindfulness and the need to have a happy and meaningful life I am always on the lookout for mental and emotional dependence patterns. Mental and emotional dependence is common amongst us all. Still, if it interferes with our ability to be happy.

I think it is fair to categorize it as a disorder. Like a physical addiction this “cognitive disorder” involves emotional–motivational withdrawal symptoms.

These withdrawal symptoms can include;

  • anxiety,
  • feeling of emptiness,
  • reduced motivation,
  • negative thought pattern,
  • …and difficulty in experiencing pleasure.

These withdrawal symptoms often become more pronounced upon the cessation of certain repetitive behaviors, and lifestyle patterns.

Mental and emotional dependence patterns can develops through frequent exposure to certain or behaviors, which leads to an individual requiring further exposure to avoid withdrawal symptoms. This is a type of negative reinforcement.

If a person has a long history of negativity, and poor choices it may influence brain chemistry to the point where they may actually develop withdrawal symptoms, much as a physical addict goes into withdrawal.

This is called Neuronal counter-adaptation.

Symptoms of mental and emotional negativity dependence include:

• Anxiety

• Panic attack

• Dysphoria

• Anhedonia

• Craving

• Stress

Development

Mental and emotional dependence develops through consistent and frequent exposure to a thought and behavioral activity.

Sufficient exposure to a stimulus capable of inducing psychological dependence, an adaptive state develops and results in the onset of withdrawal symptoms that negatively affect thought upon disengagement. Thus, for example as a person seeks to reduce negative thinking the want to think in this way increases.

Addiction — Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Consider that mental and emotional dependence is often associated excessive exercise especially in amateur and professional athletes, Often when thee athletes quit or greatly reduce their training regime there can be marked cognitive withdrawal symptoms — associated with depressive symptoms and increased anxiety. This can happen even when abstaining from experience for two weeks or longer.

The mechanism that generates dependence “neuronal counter-adaptation”, is localized to areas of that also affect drug addicts. This all comes about as changes in neurotransmitter activity or in receptor expression in the brain.

The Takeaway

When I tell some of my clients that they are going to have to rewire their brains, I’m not kidding.

It is all part of the mind body problem. The mind–body problem is a philosophical problem concerning the relationship between thought and consciousness in the human mind, and the body. It is not obvious how the concept of the mind and the concept of the body relate, but any bodyworker or massage therapist can tell you point blank that they can see the connection clearly even after a one-hour session.
