She yearned to transition to tiny shoes.

Her older sister told her repeatedly that she’d hate it.

The night before, her sister whispered.

“Why don’t you run away?”

She shook her head.

How could she know that, with her toes broken and bound back upon themselves, she’d never run again?

Foot binding was the ancient Chinese custom of breaking and tightly binding the feet of young girls in order to change the shape and size of their feet; during the time it was practiced, bound feet were considered a status symbol and a mark of beauty. Feet altered by foot-binding were known as lotus feet, and the shoes made for these feet were known as lotus shoes. (Wikipedia)
