I Have to Escape Before I Am Trapped Forever

Its time for me to stretch my arms and go through new experiences that will help me grow

I thought to myself this can't be it. I have been at my current job for the last 4 years and I have come to a point where I can't grow anymore. I have been trying to get with recruiters at my job about different tech openings and it's always a hiring freeze.

How is it a hiring freeze when I see the job postings on the company website? It's confusing especially when you see somebody from your team go to a different team and that job was supposedly on a freeze.

I got a degree in computer science and I have put in the work on the team I am on now. My job claims to encourage growth but there is not a streamlined process that gives us the ability to grow.

I often refrain from pulling the race card but these last 4 years I have been looked over and passed on by people who don't even have a degree in any type of tech field. I’m one of only 3 blacks on my team and they have gotten the “ we are on a hiring freeze” response as well.

I mean it's hard not to pull that card when you see other people who don't look like you from your team go on to get hired by different teams. It's a gut punch because you know in your mind how hard you worked and can’t even get that initial interview to show that you got the skills and the knowledge.

You have so many different reasons to stay at a company and in my case the flexibility to take off when I need to, the ability to work from home, and also the great healthcare benefits.

The two cons that outweigh those great pros are that there will be no raise anytime soon and no room for growth. For these reasons, it's definitely hard to leave and that’s why you want to apply within to keep those benefits.

It's time for me to make a change and take that leap of faith and go into a different company that values me and gives me the opportunities to be able to grow.

It's some people that have been on this team for over 10 years and seem content and that scares me more than anything because I'm going on 5 years and could possibly be just like them.

I'm applying aggressively and have already received some time to set up interviews this week. I need to make sure I'm prepared and confident so I can let the next employer know that I'm well equipped to bring value to the company.
