Don’t Waste All Your Time Checking Your Medium Stats, Do This Instead

Your results don’t deserve to dictate your creativity.

We all start at zero followers — every one of us.

In the beginning, there are two routes we can go to start delivering value into the world. We could either read great content or begin writing.

One of my most essential skillsets is getting started on a task.

Whether it’s YouTube, Medium, Tik Tok, investing, saving, etc., I’m on top of it. I thank my mom and dad for good genes that allow me to take the initiative.

The way I started on Medium was by reading content for one day to catch a feel. The following day, I started writing and didn’t care about the mistakes I made early in the process.

Once you reach a certain point, you want to check in on your progress. The stats page is one of the biggest time-killers for many other readers and me. I can see a few of you nodding as you read this.

What is the best way to spend your time? I can tell you it’s not refreshing the stats page waiting for the views to go up.

Trust me. I spent an accumulated three hours one time just refreshing my stats, so I felt like I was doing something. I wasn’t. I could’ve spent this time writing.

1. Time is Not Infinite

Besides the timing of the pandemic, time isn’t always in such abundance. Life happens. We have places to be and people to meet.

So when we get time for an intimate writing session, it’d be strategic to maximize time as much as possible.

I have found that by writing when I feel like I’m not doing enough for my audience has served me therapeutically.

The constant flow of ideas rushes into me so fast that I don’t want to risk losing ideas. So I write.

2. Your Audience is Waiting for You

As a content creator, it’s effortless for someone to become irrelevant, especially if you’re new. The majority of writers who joined Medium during the pandemic wave can still be considered fresh faces.

I would say four months is a substantial amount of time to say that you’re no longer a newbie.

After four months of writing and growing an audience, you can pump the breaks a bit.

You’ve developed a loyal enough fanbase as long as you’ve shown up for them daily or weekly.

Checking the stats page does nothing for the audience since they’re on the other end refreshing your profile ready for what’s next.

Think less about stats, and do more about the writing part — that’s what leads to happiness and results.

3. You’ll Feel Great About Yourself

Creating something that you get to share with the world is empowering. By moving past the results and generating new content, you’ll feel phenomenal.

As I’ve written this current piece, I am avoiding myself falling into the black hole of my stats page. It’s not worth my time!

You, my readers, are the ones that deserve my time. By caring too much about the statistics is a form of me being selfish. So I try to spend as much time away as possible.

Checking stats first thing in the morning, and the last thing at night isn’t too bad of an idea of measuring your progress.

Writers write to make an impact. Whether the effect is for their personal lives or other people, they are encouraged to do what leads to happiness.

As a writer, I find happiness on a blank page or a blank screen. The blankness is our canvas to write our lovely stories on to share with the world.

The stats page is for an analytical time where the beauty of words is not at the forefront focus. Spend your time wisely, ideally less on the stats and more on the writing.
