Summary

"Arc of the Immortals Book 2: Time Rifts-27: Journey" follows Touzdae's perilous journey through time rifts, her training, and the complex relationship with Jac, culminating in a dramatic betrayal and medical crisis.

Abstract

In "Time Rifts-27: Journey," the second book of the "Arc of the Immortals" series, Touzdae prepares for a treacherous crossing by undergoing rigorous physical training. She learns about Dr. Malley's Atlantean past and his real identity as Pakaiyo. As she traverses different realms, she encounters challenges, including a spontaneous duplication and a visit to Goto-ak, who hints at the pain associated with such phenomena. Meanwhile, Jac experiences dreamtime relivings and a near-fatal injury inflicted by Touzdae, leading to a risky surgical intervention involving molecular transporters. The narrative weaves between Touzdae's consciousness traveling through a corridor of light and the desperate efforts to save Jac's life, setting the stage for the next chapter in their journey.

Opinions

  • The narrative suggests a complex relationship between Touzdae and Jac, with Touzdae's actions indicating a mix of affection and conflict.
  • Dr. Malley's revelation of his Atlantean life and true identity as Pakaiyo adds depth to his character and hints at a larger backstory.
  • The concept of Forced Spontaneous Duplication introduced by Goto-ak implies a painful and rare experience, which may be significant to the plot's progression.
  • The healers' innovative use of molecular transporters to treat Jac's injury showcases the advanced technology and medical practices in the story's universe.
  • The author's note at the end, differentiating between fiction and elements of truth, suggests an intentional blend of fantasy and real-world themes to engage the reader.

Recap TR26: Two Struggles: Jac goes to his quarters. So exhausted, he falls asleep in his clothes.

Dr. Malley explores other dangerous ideas for crossing. Malley reveals to Touzdae he lived an Atlantean life.

Jac goes to dreamtime. He relives his first safe crash landing on the far side of Gata. He lands intact, and wonders if Nez is dead. He discovers her heartbeat. Climbs through a hole into a deck in space into Phorae’s Space Station. He disrobes climbs into bed with Touzdae and falls to sleep. He enters into and out of normal sleep and back into dreamtime. On the platform to all dimensions, he has been absorbed by Pursuer-Jac. Touzdae steps inside both of them. As she steps out she pulls the two Jacs into one man.∞

Touzdae goes into physical training. She’s toning up for her journey to the other side. In the final moments before beginning the process DKr. Malley shares that his real name is Pakaiyo, a Mu person, who changed his identity to board the Mu spaceship built by Atlanteans. He asks Touzdae to say hello for him to Ko and Shisla if she sees them.

Touzdae wakes in her quarters on Mu-2 and sees an injured Jac gasping for air opposite her. She wakes for real and he’s gone. After she goes to Malley’s lab and they work to cross over.

Jac and a small team wait in disputed territory. A tunnel of light and dark deposits Touzdae close by. She runs up to Jac and throws her arms around his neck. They kiss. They break and she steps back for a moment and stabs him in the chest.

Current episode: Two burly male soldiers tackled Touzdae to the deck. Shackled and taken to a safe enclosure she flailed against her restraints. (There were no jails aboard the Mu. There were a few padded rooms and “safety enclosures”)

“It’s good that she didn’t pull the blade out,” Suke said as they wheeled Jac in for surgery. “But to remove the knife may kill him.”

“We need to stop the bleeding,” another healer said.

The team of four healers and two doctor healers were able to stop the bleeding in Jac’s chest. But they hadn’t removed the knife. They had him in a forced coma.

“It’s a temporary measure,” one aide spoke aloud what others were thinking.

“Did Jac use any of the molecular transports aboard Mu?” Suke asked the Captain and other interested parties.

“I checked and no, I have no record of it.” Tommalar.

“Yes, Mr. Phorea?” Suke asked.

“He may have used a transporter aboard his Needlecraft. But how will a transporter help him?”

“We can use the transporter record to help us reconstruct the injury with healthy flesh. Then transport it into him — ”

“ — While you transport the knife out.”

“Exactly,” Suke said in self-satisfaction.

36 Hours Before

Touzdae’s consciousness moved unencumbered in a wide corridor of rainbow-colored light. Small bobbles of various shaped orbs floated around her. It was delightful and she found herself feeling giddy.

Malley/Pakaiyo monitored her body’s vitals in the sarcophagus.

After eight hours of traveling the rainbow corridor her plasma body dozed. When she woke, perhaps seconds or minutes later she was in a familiar place. Her plasma body manifested as flesh in the shop of Goto-ak on Antares Prime.ª

“Unexpected and fortuitous for you — showing up here. I had a few cancellations. I never expected to see you again,” Goto-ak said.

“I did not know I was coming here. Does it mean anything to you that I had no idea that I would be here?”

“Yes. You are a traveler. Let me guess, oh this is fun,” he paused, threw his hands waving in the air theatrically, and stopped. He put his hands on the upholstered arms of the chair.

“You are here about duplicates?”

“In a fashion,” she said wondering.

“Don’t tell me. You met or knew someone who had duplicated themselves — get it themselves plural, without my help or someone like me. Spontaneous Duplication. Very rare.” He made a face.

“What?” Touzdae was playful and outraged.

“Forced Spontaneous Duplication. That has happened to you. Are you in pain?”

“I ache for Jac and miss him,” she said with a crescendo of expectation.

“That is not what I mean. I mean physical pain.”

“I am not in major physical pain.”

“I have heard Spontaneous Duplication and Forced Spontaneous Duplication cause hard physical pain. Though Forced Spontaneous Duplication hurts more. It is the unexpected factor, you see. The recipient — of the Forced kind can’t prepare to work with the pain. You’re shaking your head in the negative.”

“I have no physical pain.”

“Oh, I was wrong.”

Malley/Pakaiyo dosed in the chair opposite the sarcophagus when a vitals alarm sounded. He jolted awake and moved to the instruments monitoring her. He looked at the scope without lifting the lid. Her body was gone.

“Touzdae has either bi-located in toto to the other side or within transit.” He raised fists in the air. Shook them in a hurrah.

“I’d better wait the full time to ensure her passage.” He made observations and took notes on his ePad.

As Touzdae asked a him another question she was pulled out of the shop of Goto-ak and out of his consciousness. She felt happy her body was flesh and plasma combined. She had successfully bi-located.

The corridor of light split. She tumbled into a tunnel of alternating light and dark. A rainbow spectrum passed through every ninety seconds. And she fell out of the tunnel into an icy realm. She felt the brutal cold, under gray cloud cover.

Remembering herself, she used her breath and relaxation to warm her body. She felt comfortable, then hot. The ice and snow began to melt. The melt time went fast. Boulder mounds appeared. Water surrounded the boulders.

“Something is coming,” she said aloud.

Her body instinctively responded. There was a quick twinge of pain. She remembered Goto-ak’s words and dismissed them. The intense pain passed as quickly as it had arrived. She waded through the knee-deep, warm water to a very small house on one of the mounds. From the outside, it was a skinny house. It would fit one person standing up with no room to move or sit down. She put her hand on the doorknob and opened it.
