Time Is Not the Most Precious Thing We Have

So what is more important than time?

It’s a common assumption that time is the most precious thing we have. Without time, what exactly do we have?

But it’s not time that makes a difference. It’s not time that makes the impact. We can spend our time doing many things or even nothing at all.

As Dr. Jim Loehr states, “The most precious resource we have is not time, but energy. We are vessels of energy, as long as we have energy, we can have impact.”

It’s the energy we put into life, the energy we put into another person or task, that matters.

Time is precious, but what we do with it is even more so.

Behind the Blog

I was sitting at a coffee shop in Phoenix and trying to catch up on all of my podcasts that I wanted to take notes on. One of them was the Tim Ferris Podcast where he interviews Dr. Jim Loehr. When he came to the line, “The most precious resource we have is not time, but energy. We are vessels of energy, as long as we have energy, we can have impact,” I had to pause and really think about that.

I’ve always thought (and likely written) that time is the or one of the most precious things we have, but when I listened to Dr. Loehr, it really got me thinking. It’s not just time itself, it’s what we put into time.

He spoke about Olympic athletes and how it’s never the ones that work the most, or the longest, that become elite, but those that put the most energy into the time they do workout. “It wasn’t the amount of time the brought but the energy they brought to the time they had that aligned with what the objective was.”

Life is very much the same. If I have time, but don’t do anything with it, that doesn’t really make an impact or develop me at all. But if I invest it… invest it in others… invest it into making a difference… invest it into my own growth… well, then, time with energy becomes the most precious thing we can have.
