TikTok Allegedly Caused A Death In Italy

I am concerned as a parent.

I read a heart-breaking article in The Guardian titled “Italy blocks TikTok users for certain users after the death of a girl allegedly playing ‘choking’ game”.

The girl was ten years old. I feel awful for her and her parents. That’s an understatement. It’s an unimaginable event.

Italy took immediate action and temporarily blocked access to users whose ages cannot be verified. TikTok requires a minimum of 13 years of age for participation.

I heard and read a lot about TikTok recently but never had a chance to engage with it meaningfully. I tried a few times, couldn’t make sense of it, and gave up. Despite my advanced level of digital intelligence, I could not adapt with the ease of Millenials and teenagers to the intricacies of TikTok.

This sad incident concerns me as a parent.

My son participates a lot in TikTok activities. Some of his clips went viral on TikTok. He converts his interesting social events to digital format and shares in TikTok.

Today I mentioned this sad event to him. He said he was alright. He knew how to protect himself from harmful incidents. Phew — what a relief.

At the end of the parenting conversation, on a lighter note, I asked him whether he could help me amplify my Medium articles on TikTok.

He looked at me sarcastically and said jokingly “Are you dumb, dad? Nobody would ever care about Medium articles on TikTok”.

I heard the message clear and loud.

My purpose is to look for creative avenues for the visibility of our Medium stories. My son’s strong response depicted it as not a viable option for my goals at this stage.

I am wondering if anyone had a chance to use TikTok for productive outcomes.

Thank you for reading my perspectives.
