Throwback Playlist: Songs of 2000s

Nostalgia: The only way to travel back in time to the 2000s

Photo by Brett Jordan on Unsplash

The year was 2021. My family and I for some reason, decided to time travel back to 2014.

A lady was operating the printer looking machine in this oddly lighted office, and we just had to show up and put our heads near the scanner part to time travel, like in the movies.

On the way back to 2021, I had an unsettling feeling that wouldn’t go away.

My mom and brother went ahead with no problems, but the lady only warned my dad and me about the dangers of time travelling. We might end up in a different place or timeline than we originally intended, and that’s beyond their control. It’s just a late warning that was given to us only after half the family is transported to a different timeline, right? Risky.

Just as my dad was ‘resetting’ his passcode (cause he forgot his password, AGAIN) to go back to 2021, I was anxiously waiting for my turn. I was mentally prepared and even asked my cousin who was with us (in the 2014 timeline) to stay back and wait for me just in case mine goes wrong and I had to stay behind.

Annndd then my alarm went off. I had to wake up and prepare for my zoom class in the next 30 minutes.

I woke up ANNOYED. What a bummer. I was so ready for the highly anticipated drama to start in my head.

How cool it is to live in a movie inside your head? Sometimes, I just love my dreams so much. They can get really exciting.

Anyway, nostalgia is somewhat of a great feeling. That familiar feeling of ‘going back in time’ by consuming media from that timeline, inspired me to start this playlist today.

I’ve been listening to older songs these days as well, as they comfort me better than new ones. I need less effort to listen to them as I am already familiar and I know what’s coming up next, no need to anticipate anything new.

Not sure if anyone else also thinks some music these days (no specific artists, just in general) have…hmm let’s just call it somewhat of a similar sound, but that’s a talk for another day — one that I’ll be up for anytime.

I think it’s an opinion I’ve been hearing around me for years now that I agree with.

Or maybe, let me know what you think in the response? Would love to hear what you think!

Nonetheless, there’s still no argument that the decade of 2000–2010 gave us REALLY great, iconic songs that are still good till this day. And a ton of nostalgia.

I grew up in the 2000s. These are the songs I grew up with and grew up loving at different phases in my life. I’m sure people both older and younger than me would know these songs too.

I had to narrow them down to just 30 in no particular order, though I had more to this list in mind.

Let’s take the trip down memory lane together.

1. Rihanna — Don’t Stop The Music

2. Leona Lewis — Bleeding Love

3. Bruno Mars — Just The Way You Are

4. Lady Gaga — Bad Romance

I was a big fan of Lady Gaga’s music when I was much younger, as influenced by a cousin I looked up to who did the same. It seems pretty cool to think I was a fan of her music before. I had so many phases when I was obsessed with very different artists. One of them was her! I almost forgot until I was compiling this playlist and going, ahh — yes, this song!

5. Justin Timberlake — Cry Me A River

6. Kesha — Tik Tok

The only Tik Tok I knew growing up. This song was used for dance performance back in primary school by the school prefects as well! Memories.

7. Train — Hey Soul Sister

8. Rihanna — Umbrella

Ella, ella, eh, eh, eh.

Iconic.

9. Lady Gaga — Just Dance

10. Kelly Clarkson — Because Of You

My mom still has this in her Spotify playlist.

11. Flo Rida — Low

12. Linkin Park — Numb

13. Evanescence — Bring Me Back To Life

14. Britney Spears — Toxic

15. Daniel Powter — Bad Day

This song will never not give me nostalgia.

16. Jason Mraz — I’m Yours

It was one of the first few songs every beginning guitarist and ukulele player knew how to play! I was there too when I first started learning guitar.

17. Alicia Keys — If I Ain’t Got You

18. Fergie — Big Girls Don’t Cry (Personal)

I actually didn’t know the title of this song till I shazam-ed it in the store last year, or the year before.

19. Coldplay — Yellow

20. Jay Z ft. Alicia Keys — Empire State Of Mind

21. The Script — Breakeven

The Script is one of my absolute favourite bands. I just love their songs and lyrics. This is the song that made me a fan of The Script. Breakeven never gets old, at least for me.

22. The Fray — How To Save A Life

23. The Black Eyed Peas — I Gotta Feeling

24. The Pussycat Dolls — Don’t Cha

25. Gwen Stefani — Hollaback Girl

26. The Killers — Mr Brightside

27. Avril Lavigne — Complicated

28. Kings Of Leon — Use Somebody

29. Coldplay — Viva La Vida

30. Coldplay — The Scientist

As I was compiling this playlist, I have two realisations.

  1. I still prefer music played in a band setting
  2. That so many bands has ‘The’ in their band names — 5 of the bands cover that category in this list.

Do let me know if I missed out on anything that you love! I wanted to include more, but that’ll just make the playlist even longer!

Prompt:

What songs did you grow up with?

It could cover songs from any decade, period whatsoever. I’m interested to hear from you!
