Through The Window At The Opera
Six Word Photo Story Challenge: Freestyle
Two old friends share the gossip.
We inherited several cacti a couple of years ago. The circumstances were such that we didn’t have the chance to ask questions about type or upkeep, so have had to rely on observation and reading the cactus books.
In this shot, I feel that I’ve caught them from behind by photographing them through the window. I’m aware of the logical flaws in this thinking, but they have a relaxed look to them. Approach openly from the other side, and they’ll stop talking to each other and prepare their weaponry. You’d be surprised at the range from which they can get you with those spikes.
We think they might be golden barrels but we haven’t ruled out the chin cactus or the echinocactus. If they flower we’ll get to know for sure.
Sitting here, I see them in the back row of a theatre swapping gossip as an opera plays out down below. The companion to their left (perhaps a prickly pear) is fully engaged with activities on stage, throwing its arms wide to conduct the performance.
A cleaner window might have enhanced the shot but I rather liked the mix of the audience within, the ivy watching from outside, and the reflections of trees, sky, and photographer.
