Three Writing-Related Jobs You Probably Haven’t Considered Yet

I’m a stalker.
Or at least that’s what I feel like I am sometimes. I have this habit of checking out what other writers are doing, perusing their social media profiles and digital bios to learn how they’re making a living from their writing.
I do this not to be a creep but because I want to model my life after successful people. You can’t copy another person’s journey, but you can learn something about what works.
In my search for writing-related jobs, I found three writers whose line of work stood out. You don’t often hear what they’ve been up to, so it might interest you to learn about them, too.
Todd Brison [Book Coach | Amazon SEO Specialist]
Todd Brison is an OG on Medium. He no longer posts on the platform. His last was May 25, 2021. But he’s been making quite a decent living from his writing.
He does several things. Those who’ve bought Tim Denning’s courses know Todd because he’s Tim’s partner. They co-teach various courses in the Badassery Academy, from copywriting to speed writing.
Apart from working with Tim Denning, Todd also does client work. He does copywriting, which is a pretty common job title nowadays.
But here’s another thing he does, which I find interesting: book coaching/consulting.
Todd prides himself on being a literary romantic. He loves books, and has written several. Todd also works with clients on how to write their books and position them on Amazon.
In one of the courses I took at Badassery Academy, Todd introduced me to Amazon SEO. It was the first time I ever heard the term.
When I think SEO, I think of Google. But just like Google, the Amazon marketplace is a search engine. Therefore, there are tricks on how to rank books well on Amazon.
Todd is a pro at it.
So, if you love books and want to make a living out of that passion, consider book consulting and learning how to work the Amazon algorithm.
It’s a bit hard to pinpoint how much book consultants make, but this article from The Weekend Publisher might help. It lists rates for a similar job title: writing coach.
Michael Thompson [Communication Consultant | Storytelling Expert]
Michael Thompson is a legend on Medium. Those who know him likely recognize this viral story he wrote some years ago:
As you’ll notice from that story and others in his blog, Michael is a storyteller.
In the age of chatGPT, the ability to tell stories is more important now than ever. Michael has mastered the art and has leveraged that into a thriving business.
He offers a few services on his website, which all revolve around communication strategy. Michael’s skill is so valuable that he can charge over four figures per client every month.
If you have a knack for storytelling or want to learn it, communication consulting is one career path you can pursue.
Glassdoor lists the average annual salary for communication strategists at $94401.
Justin Cox [Non-profit Consultant | Grant Writer]
Many writers on Medium probably recognize Justin Cox. He’s the editor of The Writing Cooperative, the largest Medium publication dedicated to writing inspiration and advice.
Outside of Medium, however, Justin works as a non-profit consultant. He helps them with several things, including grant writing.
There are many types of writing, but grant writing is one we don’t often hear about. It gets buried underneath other titles, like copywriter and SEO writer.
But grant writing can be an excellent way to make a living. Salary.com reports that grant writers earn an average annual salary of $76893. Not bad.
Grant writing could be a great option if you like helping mission-driven organizations.
So there you have it, three unique writing careers. They’re relatively untapped opportunities, but they can be pretty rewarding.
