Three Tips New Writers Can Do To Get Your Other Posts Read

Just a few examples of things I’ve done that have worked for me.

If you are a new writer, a big part of improvement comes with sharing your work for critique and feedback. So it’s important when you’re starting out to get your work out there.

One caveat, though, is when you’re new and no one knows you, you may accumulate a long list of posts, articles, or books that no one has ever read.

If you’re publishing daily or a few times a week, real gems can get lost in the accumulating pile, and I wanted to figure out a way to get them back up into the public eye.

The Power of the Pinned Post

Did you know you can pin five posts to the top of your profile page? They will show up as the first five posts people see when they click on your page or any links to your page.

I always pin my most recent post in the first three pinned posts so that when people click on a link that sends them to my profile to read the post, they see it quickly, but they also see my other top two pinned posts, and I hope they give those a read too.

How to pin a post to the top of your page:

  • Click on the three dots next to the download icon on your story.
  • Click on “Pin this story to your profile.”

The story will be pulled from your older posts to the top of your page. This post was written a year ago, so it was way down in the pile. You know how it goes, out of sight, out of mind. But when I pinned it, it was pulled up to the top of my profile page.

Since Halloween is right around the corner, I’ll pull up old scary stories and poetry I wrote years ago and maybe get some fresh reads.

Re-Purpose & Re-Publish

I read some of my older posts and cringe. But now that I understand how to write a post, I figure, why not take those older posts and repurpose them?

I feel that if something inspired you to write the post originally, there must be something that needs to be said, and we need to hear it.

Now that my writing has improved, I can take my older works, reformat them correctly according to the platform’s guidelines, re-edit, or sometimes completely re-write them and then re-post.

Don’t forget to add some SEO keywords. Being intentional with SEO tags and keywords will result in better rankings in search engines.

I’ve done this with some of my old gardening advice posts, and the read ratio improved significantly.

Don’t leave those old ideas down at the bottom of your pile. Pull them out and give them another go.

Direct Traffic to Medium by Posting Your Post on Other Platforms.

There are many ways you can turn your Medium posts or articles into other forms of content for other platforms.

  • Create a Pinterest Pin and link it back to your Medium post.
  • Create a Post on [X] with the best line from your Medium post, linking to your Medium profile.
  • Post a question in Quora that your Medium post answers, then post a response with a link to your Medium post.
  • Post the Medium post on Facebook.
  • Create an Instagram post with a link to the Medium post.
  • Post your Medium post on your own website and add the canonical link.
  • Create a TikTok about your post extracting the most important lines of the Medium post, and add a link back to the Medium post.

There are so many other ways to drive traffic back to your Medium profile and posts, these are just a few I’ve experimented with.
