In every aspect of life, if we want to know if we are successful or if we are on track, we measure. We need to be able to quantify our efforts if we want to see if we are making any progress, or if we need to do something different.

When we talk about habits, it is the same logic. We can use different strategies to create it, but any habit formation is a long term commitment. It takes time to see the results we are expecting. If we are on a diet, can take months or years to see progress. If we quit smoking, it can take even a decade to our body to recover.

So, we need an immediate reason to maintain and stick adherence to our habit development. Something that can provide us with feedback to see if we are doing well, or if we need to make any modification on time.

A habit tracker can play that role for us. It helps us to visualise the progress we are making, even if we do not see it. And this can make all the difference to maintain our efforts and the outcome alive.

A habit tracker is quite simple. It is the way you track and measure a habit and can be done in many forms. You can have a calendar, and filled with colour or an X, every day that you complete your routine. With technology, today you can use you an app for your phone or computer that will do the same. It’s all depends on what is more comfortable for you.

There are different benefits from a habit tracker, all of them related to the support that provides to maintain a habit in formation. James Clear, Habits expert, has defined three as the main ones. And, I can say from first hand that those are the ones that I have seen on my tracking progress.

Invite you to act

A habit tracker It is a visual reminder. Every time you mark your calendar, or you update your daily tracking app, you are acting. The tracker will force you to maintain the routine that you are trying to create.

One of the good things to have an app as a habit tracker is that you can set a daily reminder to hold you accountable. If you are using a calendar or a paper, then I would recommend you set a daily alarm on your phone to remind you to act.

Motivates you to continue

I use an app for my habit tracking. And when I do what I said I would do, a green box appears, and when I miss one day, then a red box will appear.

When I see full of green boxes, I feel more motivated to continue, because I do not want to lose the streak.

This is a small but beautiful psychological motivator; each day you complete your tracker, you have a small win. And that is as huge motivation to continue because you see tangible results.

Provides Satisfaction

Similar to the above, see everything in green do not only improves motivation, but it also gives you satisfaction. You feel good seeing how you are moving forward, step by step every day.

You feel rewarded. Complete a day without smoking, or eating healthy, or any goal you have, it is an immediate satisfaction that you need to feel to continue working on that habit.

It is important to remember than a habit tracker is good for new habits formation, or reinforce the ones that you have been loosing and you want to take back. And, simplicity is the key. Use whatever you prefer, can be an app, can be your notebook, cellphone, or a paper. The essential aspect is to use something is not complicated, and that you always have at the reach of your hand.

Finally, a habit tracker helps you to be honest with yourself. There is no one else looking at (except if you want to share it), so it’s your private measure. Only if you are sincere, you will be able to create the habit that you are looking for.
