Three Quick Reasons to Self-Publish vs Established Publications
Many writers self-publish entirely.
Choosing to self-publish your writing instead of submitting it to established publications does offer its own set of advantages. Here are three reasons why you should consider self-publishing to be better.
1. Full Control Over Content and Timing
- When you self-publish, you have complete control over your content. You can choose the topics, your writing style, and your overall presentation without the requirements imposed by a publication’s editorial guidelines. As for me, some of my stories are written to be read in a certain order, which can’t always survive two different editors or publications. I also, use the publication of one story to propel the subsequent one, so self-publication, for me, can speed up the process.
- Self-publishing allows you to decide when and how frequently you release content. You’re not bound by the schedule of a publication, giving you the flexibility to publish according to your own timeline. Some of your favorite publications may have to limit the number of each writer’s stories per day, and that will absolutely affect, if not determine your timeline.
2. Building a Personal Brand
- Self-publishing enables you to build and maintain a personal brand. You are the sole curator of your body of work, and readers can easily identify and connect with your unique voice and perspective. Whether you are an influencer or just a popular writer, it can let you be you.
- Over time, a consistent and high-quality body of work can establish you as an authority on your topic, attracting followers and building your own readership base.
3. Direct Interaction with Your Readers
- When you self-publish, you have more direct access to your audience through their comments, responses, and questions. This direct interaction can provide valuable feedback, insights, and the opportunity to connect with your readers on a more personal level.
- By engaging with your readers, you can build a loyal following, cultivate a community around your work, and sometimes tailor your content to the preferences and interests of your readers.
Last words
Ultimately, the decision on whether to self-publish your writing or submit it to established publications on your favorite platform depends on your goals, your own preferences, and the nature of your writing.
Some writers strike a balance between both approaches, utilizing the benefits of self-publishing for some specific pieces while also using the greater exposure and community of some of the larger, more established publications.
Experimenting with the different strategies can help you decide which works best for your reason for writing.
