Three of Pentacles — Mars in Capricorn

Mars energy is aggressive and direct. When unbridled, this force can become destructive, just like a fire that leaps from its boundaries. However, in this placement, Mars unites with the Saturnian characteristics of Capricorn and finds a positive outlet for its passionate and courageous nature.

The result is harnessed creative energy that is laser-focused on achieving results. Thus, in the Rider-Waite deck, the Three of Pentacles is portrayed by showing an artisan standing in a cathedral, getting approval for his project from well-to-do patrons. This is an opportunity to get recognition and validation for creative endeavors and hard work. It represents achievement, social acceptance, and reward for well-earned efforts.

Both of the signs that Saturn rules over in classical astrology, Capricorn and Aquarius, are located in opposition to the Sun and Moon in Cancer and Leo. Since the Luminaries are seen as light-giving, life-sustaining forces, Saturn has earned a reputation for being cold-natured and shadowy. It is the snow and frozen ice found on the top of the mountain, where the billy goat thrives despite the harshness of the climate.

The summer season ruled over by the Sun and Moon is the time for play and leisure, for swimming and basking in the rays of the light. In contrast, January and February are times of darkness and difficulty, survival and restriction.

Yet, with the Three of Pentacles, the fiery nature of Mars sweeps in and gives a much-needed burst of life. It is the bonfire that keeps the village warm and toasty while the snow is still on the ground. It’s the glow of the hearth that the family gathers around to sing songs and feast on the last remnants of the best quality food from the storehouse. By taking in this powerful heat when it’s most needed, the Seeker has all the energy and resources needed to plow through the difficulty of their project and gain glory as a prize for their labor. Through this card, we are shown that hard work pays off if we utilize the energy at our disposal in a way that is focused and directed by our Will.
