Three Comedy Specials That Definitely, Definitely Haven’t Made Me Pee My Pants Laughing

Some laughs for your holiday season.

Do you like to laugh? Don’t answer, that was a silly question. If you don’t like laughing, you’re 100% dead.

And honestly, I’d put money on half the “uuuuuugggghhh” in zombie movies being their version of dad jokes.

If you’re anticipating a funny-but-humiliating story about how I totally peed my pants watching a Netflix comedy special, I must disappoint you. Dude, I said that didn’t happen. It’s right there in the title.

Seriously. Pay attention.

Netflix Is A Goldmine of Comedy

I don’t know if you’re into standup, but if you are, my friends, buckle up cause you’re in for a treat. Netflix has a host of comedy specials ranging from full-length (hour-ish) to what they apparently call “comedy snacks” (20 minute specials you can watch on your commute).

My husband and I have watched our three favorite comedians so many times we can pretty much sit there quoting the whole thing back and forth from memory. These comedians are very successful but not the absolutely biggest names in comedy, so they might have slipped under your radar.

These are our three favorite specials from our three favorite comedians.

(You’re welcome)

Iliza Schlesinger — Elder Millennial

Dude. Dude. Howlingly funny, definitely the best of her five (five!) specials on Netflix thus far.

Iliza is the winner of 2008’s Last Comic Standing and (as previously mentioned) has five standup specials on Netflix. Her comedy is observational, and her takes on being a Millennial are brilliant (though, as she points out, she is an elder millennial. Wizened! Sage! Yes, gather round the Snapchat, children, as I tell ye the tale…of the landline).

Flipping gold.

Katherine Ryan — Glitter Room

Ze husband and I discovered Katherine Ryan a few years after we were already holding our sides from Iliza. She’s a Canadian who lives in London with her daughter and has two specials and an also uproariously funny one-season Netflix show based on her life.

Her humor is a little more adult than Iliza’s — she talks about subjects like life with her daughter, being a single mom, and the utter douchebags you meet in the pickup-line at elementary school (does anyone know Jane, from North London?).

Immensely quotable. Very hilarious. Adore her madly.

Enissa Amani — Ehrenwort

Not gonna lie, I’m not a huge fan of subtitles. I like to be able to listen to what’s going on and watch the action, not try to read and watch at the same time. Personal thing of mine.

Which makes it utterly nuts that my third-favorite comedy special is by a German lady, ENTIRELY in German. Like, how does humor translate like that?? *shakes tv* TELL ME YOUR WAYS I MUST KNOW!

Also, a hilarious sidenote: some of the subtitles are wrong. She says in a different special that the Netflix translators messed up — she says the word “aller” (which means ‘dude’ or something to that effect) with a Hessian accent, so it sounds like “alla.” And because she’s German-Iranian, the Netflix translators thought she was saying “Allah.”

Guys. Really. Though, as she points out, it’s no wonder her special went so well — she had divine protection!

Conclusion: Have A Happy, Laughing Holiday

My loves, Christmas and similarly-timed holidays can be stressful as fuck. And there’s legit nothing worse than sitting around the living room with family you never talk to as the awkward silence stretches on.

I figure that my contribution to the success of your holiday season can be some laughs. And (if you deem them family-appropriate) maybe something to turn on so the awkward silence doesn’t get quite that loud.

But seriously screen the first two first, there’s language.

Merry Christmas!

Shoutout to Liberty Forrest, Author for her great explanation and advice for people who are doing Christmas solo. I hope these specials can brighten your holidays, or at least bring a laugh.
