Thoughts On My 1st Month Writing On Medium
It has been a month since I started writing on Medium, and what a month it has been. It has been full of surprises, disappointments, and moments of pride.

It has been a month since I started writing on Medium, and what a month it has been. It has been full of surprises, disappointments, and moments of pride. I genuinely love Medium as a platform and how it gives everyone a voice. There is no need to be a professional writer to contribute and share your thoughts. I have genuinely enjoyed reading countless blogs from others and engaging in the community. I love the feeling of recognizing someone for the work they put into their writing. There are many beautiful voices to hear, and everyone contributes a fresh perspective.
I have grown as a writer, but there is SO much more growth I hope to do. I have not had any writing experience before joining this community besides a couple of beginner-level writing classes in college. I have always enjoyed writing, and how we can pass our words down to future generations is remarkable. I enjoy putting thoughts to paper (screen) and sharing them with others. I believe that everyone has something of value they can provide, and sharing our thoughts can benefit society as a whole.
One of my favorite aspects of Medium is the diverse range of voices we can hear from. It is incredible how we all can share freely and put our subjects into digestible readings for everyone. I am thankful for a platform where I can share my opinions on topics I have a lot of experience in.
A few lessons I learned along the way are that there is no telling what writing piece will succeed. Some of my favorite writings have fallen flat, and some, which I was not as proud of, garnered more reads than expected. I was able to write every day consistently, and I believe there were some days when I provided even too much writing for a single day.
One key area where I still need to improve is keeping attention on my writing. I am unsure of the norm, but my writings will have one successful day after publication, and then the reads drop steeply. This limits the views and, of course, the earnings as well. As I continue to grow my followers list, I hope not to have as large of an issue with this.
I am thankful I have reached the goals I set out to achieve in my first month. One of those was to become a verified author. I really wanted that blue book icon next to my name. I am unsure of the actual impact it will have on me on Medium, but I enjoy that it puts me in the company of other incredibly successful writers on this platform.
Another goal I was proud to reach was having 100 followers in my first month. I cut this one very close, as I crossed that threshold on the last day. At this current moment, I have 104 followers. I am proud of this as I thought this was a lofty goal to reach for myself.
My final goal was earnings; I had no idea what to expect. I arbitrarily set a goal of $15, and I was surprisingly close as I actually earned $16.80. I am proud of this; honestly, it is more than I expected. I started doing this to develop myself in an area I hadn’t focused on before and to share my thoughts and philosophies. I was pursuing self-development, and I am thankful I was able to earn along the way.

If I could have the chance to do this past month differently, I would have focused more on quality and less on quantity. Some days, I put out numerous new writings, but I could have been more successful if I reduced the number and more thoroughly polished and edited them. I am still happy overall with the quality of my writing, considering the amount of work I put in, but writing so many wasn’t necessary or beneficial. Another aspect I would have focused on was being more engaged in the Medium community. There are many great writers to read, and I wish I had extensively focused on this from day 1. It not only makes a significant difference in my life, but it also spurs ideas of what I can write about.
Overall, I am proud of the work I put in and the month that I had. I am happy that I set goals and met all of them. It was a learning curve, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I think my goals were surprisingly set well as I didn’t obliterate them, and they came down to the last day to meet.
My new goals for my 2nd month will be as follows
- Gain 200 more followers and bring my total to 304.
- Double my earnings and make at least $34.
- Contribute to at least three other writers’ articles daily for the next month.
Setting goals for anything you wish to accomplish is essential, and I am excited for my 2nd month. I hope it goes well, and I will post another entry a month from today detailing my progress and whether I reached my goals.
