This Week’s Heavy Rotation #9

If you can’t get what you want, then come with me

Photo: Author’s collection

Here we are. My ninth list. I thought about making this one into a theme. After all, there’s no shortage of songs related to the number 9.

Nena’s 99 Luftballons

-or-

Love Potion #9

-or-

Revolution 9

How about 9 songs by Nine Inch Nails? That could be fun, right?

Luckily, I thought better of it, and went with what I always share; the tracks I played the most over the past week.

Maybe next time…

And with that, here are my Top 5 over the last 7 days:

Morning Glory- Oasis

I love the way this song builds up. Like the second before dropping in on your first ski run, or going down a water slide, The intro starts and you know you’re in for an adventure. It’s always surprised me that it wasn’t the opening track on the album.

Always in Love-Wilco

Summerteeth came out 22 years ago this week. As if I needed any more reminders that I’m getting old. The record sounds as good as ever. Me? Not so much. I should be so lucky!

Idaho-Slow Pulp

One of my neighbors put this on an Instagram story, and I can’t stop listening to it. It feels like a cross between Throwing Muses and My Bloody Valentine. I also dig the Windows 95 style graphics on the video.

Gravel Pit-Wu Tang Clan

I’ve mentioned it before, but my older son is trying his hand at rapping. Like any good helicopter parent, I keep trying to steer him towards the sound(s) I like. I like sending him tracks to sample or “mine beats” from. WuTang is for the children, right? This is one of them. I’ve had a couple of chances to see WuTang in person and missed both. I’ve been kicking myself ever since.

FWIW, this is the clean version — and the one I shared with him. The not-even-close-to-SFW version is here. The main sample comes from this song.

On Melancholy Hill-Gorillaz

The “saddest dance song ever” according to my other son. Maybe, but its beauty is in its simplicity and plaintive lyrics. I used the live video here because nautically dressed Mick Jones and Joe Simonon from The Clash are what we all need right now. Mick’s moves are fantastic. Nature is healing.
