Abstract

The text "This Thing About Sex…" by Bhavna Narula delves into the multifaceted nature of sexual intercourse, illustrating how its interpretation shifts dramatically depending on various factors. It can be seen as prostitution when transactional, consummation in the context of marriage, procreation for conception, pornography for visual pleasure, revenge in situations of animosity, a booty call for casual encounters, rape when non-consensual, blackmail if coerced by fear, casual sex for fun, infidelity outside of marriage, homosexuality when involving same-gender partners, casting couch in exchange for favors, or simply as making love when it's an expression of mutual affection. The author muses on the transformative connotations of sex, emphasizing its complexity and the profound impact of human intentions and societal norms on its perception.

This Thing About Sex…

One activity, different connotations

Prostitution if done in return for money,

Consummation if done by a couple on their wedding night,

Procreation if done to create a baby,

Porn if done to give pleasure to the viewer,

Revenge if done with anger and resentment,

Booty call if done by two hormonally-charged bodies,

Rape if done without one’s consent,

Blackmail if done out of fear,

Casual if done for just fun,

Infidelity if done out of wedlock,

Homosexuality if done by the same genders,

Casting couch if done in to give something as a favor,

Sex, when done by two people who just want to make love to each other.

Just a thing to ponder upon. It always amuses me to note, how the most pleasurable activity in the universe changes forms, depending on who is doing it, and what are their underlying intentions.
