This Snow
Free Verse poem
fallen silently painting the streets wet and lucid while I lie dreaming
and the chow pup chained against the tree laid bare shivering, shivering
with smoke risen melted into the grey sky

I awoke the other morning to a blanket of snow and noticed the neighbor next door had his chow pup chained to a tree, in the snow. I was incensed! I’d already begged him several times this winter to bring the poor pup inside. He would for a few hours and then back out it would go, chained to the tree. I called Animal Control this time — they took the pup and my neighbor was charged with animal cruelty and neglect this morning in court. There is no sense in this. If it is too cold outside for you, it is too cold for your pets too!
