This Simple Habit Can Yield Maximum Results In 2024
Stay strong in 2024 with the habit of silence

I hope some of you have already started implementing your New Year’s resolutions.
Today, I won’t demotivate you by sharing statistics on the success rate of resolutions. Instead, I’ll suggest one habit you should follow this year.
According to a study conducted across 29 countries, one out of every two people in the world will develop a mental health disorder in their lifetime.
This statistic is quite alarming, and it prompts us to reflect on what is happening in our lives.
With changing technologies, lifestyles, and work cultures, mental health issues are becoming significant challenges worldwide.
How can you protect yourself? What actions do you need to take? Read on.
Set a Pause to Auto-Pilot Mode
In the past, when I was doing anything important, my mind kept telling me to plan for the next activity.
This actually irritated me at one stage; really, I couldn’t focus on my current tasks.
Always looking for the next thing made me an anxious person; I really didn’t know what to do to make it stop.
These running thoughts continued while I was in bed at night, making it really hard to sleep.
Later, I followed a habit that helped me improve my sleep and overcome anxiety — silence.
Waiting For Weekend
“People who struggle with racing thoughts are constantly worried about what needs to be done, what hasn’t been done, and what is next,” explains Fairlee Fabrett, PhD, a psychologist at Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital.
Racing thoughts, thinking about the future, and worrying about the past are common among people working across different fields. Most of the time, we ignore this and don’t take any steps to avoid it.
For instance, employees who feel stuck in their jobs are constantly worried and thinking about their job throughout the weekdays.
Instead of planning to overcome it, most of them look forward to weekends to calm their minds, and the same loop continues.
Suppressing our thoughts and waiting for weekends is not the right strategy at all; we should do something else on a daily basis to balance our minds.
Why Should You Make Silence a Habit?
Did you know why some productivity techniques are not working? Lack of energy is a major culprit; you need to keep your mind calm and energetic to properly focus on the task at hand.
In a 2021 study, 59 participants engaged in tasks requiring concentration. They were exposed to different background conditions: silence, speech, or other noise.
The findings revealed that individuals working in silence experienced the lowest cognitive load and reported the least amount of stress compared to those in the other conditions.
In 2006, a study found that staying quiet for just 2 minutes can make you feel more relaxed than listening to calm music.
In summary, silence can improve your sleep, productivity and mental health.
How I Implemented This Habit in My Daily Routine
Every day, before going to sleep, I simply sit quietly in my room alone, without doing anything.
Initially, my mind would wander around different topics, but nowadays, it feels calm most of the time. I no longer sense much negativity; instead, I feel a deep sense of calm.
This simple habit of silence has significantly improved my sleep. Now, instead of tossing and turning in bed, I achieve a good amount of sleep right away.
Incorporating 15 minutes of complete silence into your daily routine can lead to lasting improvements in your work.
For those who wish to start this habit, I recommend beginning with a minimum of 5 minutes.
If you find your thoughts overwhelming, close your eyes, listen to the surrounding noises, then open your eyes, and focus on any three objects in your room.
Conclusion
While maintaining physical health through resolutions like hitting the gym and walking 10,000 steps a day is important, it’s equally crucial to recognize the significance of mental well-being.
Allocating just five minutes to silence or practicing a simple meditation technique can serve as a valuable investment in overall health.
Wishing you a happy and fulfilling year ahead.
