This Mountain of Years

A poetic reflection on wasted years

There I stood upon a mountain of years Atop the peak, all was so clear Dare I look down at the valley below? At the landscape of days gone by? I stepped to the edge to peer and wonder

What if?

Below, I saw a familiar sight A man identical to my younger self He was scrambling after all he thought he needed Leaving behind those who truly mattered

He was making all the mistakes I wish I could reverse He was losing the ones he loved while serving himself Wishing he could hear me, I cried out from the edge

Was it worth it?!

Maybe the question was for him Or was it for me? I’m not sure

Left to watch from upon my mountain of years The careless life that brought me to this lonely hill It's too late to change the missteps and bad patterns Too late to reverse days gone by I stepped away from the edge I can bear it no more And I whispered

What now?
