This Is Why It Is Important to Have a Mentor In Life

Someone who can guide you on this journey called life

“Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had real positive influences in his or her life. I don’t care what you do for a living — if you do it well I’m sure there was someone cheering you on or showing the way. A mentor.” — Denzel Washington

It was suffocating.

I felt like getting choked and wanted to run. But where should I run?

Frustrated I sat on my desk with my head down on the table. Despite achieving everything I was expected to, I was feeling stuck off late.

I liked what I did but still, something was missing.

One of my senior colleagues happened to come to my side, she asked what happened which I answered with a shrug.

The next day, She gifted me a book- “Unaccustomed Earth” by Jhumpa Lahiri.

One week later, I wrote my first short story and felt alive after a long time.

Since then, she became my mentor and I have counseled her on so many aspects.

I never knew I needed one but I got one and now I have a couple of these people who are angels in my life.

You also need to find those angels to get the best out of life.

It can help you to meet yourself

True mentors have this unique ability to pick up vibes that everyone else misses from within you.” — Ahmad R Kazi

A mentor is someone who can give you an unbiased third-person view of yourself.

It can also help you find you or create a new you while you are busy being someone others have defined.

My mentor gave me that book and that incident changed my life.

How did she know I had that knack for writing?

I used to post quotes and poetry on Facebook, and she had offered her comments sometimes on that.

Maybe she thought I had potential, but she didn’t force that on me. She let me find myself and do what I wanted to do because I liked it, not because someone else had told me to.

Like this in so many ways your mentor helps you, guides you, and nudges you to find that side of yours you never knew existed.

It can help you to create a vision for your life

There are umpteen lives on this planet who had the potential to change the course of this world. They had the talent, and were hard-working but didn’t know where to start and where to go.

They had no idea of what they had brought to this world and what they can do with this.

Because they had no one to guide them.

A mentor can fill this gap.

Because she has more experience of the world and has seen more life than you, she knows how to make you use of your time in the best way here.

She can create a vision for your life that will serve your passion, your talent, and your inner desire.

It can also help you build a road map for that vision and will guide you to achieve that.

It can help you to move where you are stuck

“More than mere teachers, mentors are often emancipators, freeing artists from poor technique, clouded vision and personal uncertainty.” — Paul Soderberg

We have heard stories about players who were greats in their field and then had gone through a patch.

It continued until they came across a new coach who removed the blockage in their game, and their mindset and helped them achieve new heights.

Like these players, we also need a mentor to help us take that next step when we are stuck.

When you are part of the problem, you see everything from the same perspective.

But when another experienced individual sees the same problem from a different angle, sooner or later the solution is bound to emerge.

It can help you to decide when you are unsure and help you to choose the right path for you.

It can give you a new mindset

We are what we have seen and experienced since childhood. We think and behave based on that.

But that thinking may not always be the right way to think.

A mentor can help you to bridge that gap between what you think and what you need to think to achieve your goal.

Being born in the middle class, I always had a negative relationship with money and considered it the root of all my problems.

But once one of my mentors helped me to sort my money blueprint, all these problems started going away.

Same way, your mentor can help you to improve your mindset. It can be your relationship with yourself, your surroundings, money, health, and everything that matters to you.

It can push you to achieve your best

We as individuals always underestimate our best.

But, a mentor knows how much you can be pushed, what is your potential, and what you can achieve.

She has seen hundreds like you and knows what is the limit one can be pushed.

You might think that this is it, I cant do more.

But your mentor will push you and guide you to cross that limit and redefine your best as Bob Proctor says:

“A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.”

And once this mindset becomes the default in your system, you are ready to break your personal best again and again.

Summing up:

When we go on holiday to any historical monuments, we hire a guide. That guide not only tells the story about that place but helps us visit that place in a more organized manner.

The idea is to use our time in the best way in that place.

The mentor in our life does that same job.

You are anyway living your life. You will achieve something. You will become something.

But whether that something is doing justice to your capabilities and the time you spent here.

A mentor can help you to cut this gap between what is and what could be.

So, even if you think you are not stuck and have achieved what you wanted to and don’t think you need anyone for guidance.

Think again.

You might be missing out to meet the best you could be.

So, take that step to approach that person who you think might help you in doing that and unleash the new you.
