This Is Why Americans Are Wearily Waiting for Their Country to Implode
…while the rest of the world is cautiously buying popcorn.

Trump was inevitable. Too many rubes not to exploit. (JD)
As left-wing Americans are apathetically waiting for the country to implode and right-wingers are joyously waving flags meant to make America great again through anger and dissension, writers like myself are busy keeping score and taking the pulse of a conflictual society.
About once a month, I write America-inspired articles. The more or less extreme patriots consider them America-bashing. They’re not. They’re nothing but a satirical and sometimes caustic analysis, but I happen to love the US. That doesn’t mean I’m blind to its faults.
On the 4th of July I had the audacity to write about The 5 Deeply American Things That America Already Failed Miserably.
And I got an answer that is much better than my article. So beautifully-written and loaded with truths that I had to share it with the world (with the writer’s permission, of course).
The author is JD, a writer who deserves a much wider audience and isn’t afraid to hit the nail on the head in this comment and all their articles.
This is what JD had to say:
‘Here in the US, we aren’t so much citizens as we are commodities to be exploited. Most people are dimly aware of that in some way. They may not be able to articulate that but they sure can feel it. Maybe not so much in the middle and upper classes, but for sure anyone else.
That explains a lot of the anger.
Moreover, America is the greatest country in the world if you are rich.
You can leave when you want and visit civilization in Europe. For the rest of us, you have to be asleep to believe in the American dream.
The healthcare system here is abysmal. I know, I worked in it for decades and in 21 states.
The rural areas are horrendous and they are far worse now that abortion is no longer legal. So many OB/GYNs are leaving those states because nobody can determine if it’s legal to treat a woman having a pregnancy complication that will end in her demise.
So, those communities are being denied proper prenatal care. And they voted for it.
They never seem to think things through or learn from their mistakes. I really don’t think they even remember them. It’s easy just to react and get riled up I guess.
We have the worst media system in the free world.
It doesn’t inform, it just tells you what to think and focuses on the shallower aspects of politics so our political system is shallow and unresponsive to our needs.
It’s a wonder half the people can actually think.
The media here is all about market share. Not truth. Not informed citizens. More like malformed citizens. It’s a sad joke.
Trump was inevitable. Too many rubes not to exploit I guess.
Everything here is about money. You can buy freedom if you can. Most can’t.
Too many are working 3 jobs just to pay the Wall Street artificially inflated rents and eating subsidized junk food. Good food isn’t subsidized so it’s expensive.
That creates all sorts of health problems that are profitable for pharmaceutical companies.
I don’t blame people for being angry. I blame them for not blaming themselves. It’s a grand American pastime to blame the “other” but not actually talk to them and find out that they have the same problems.
The union-busting was so successful that it ingrained a sense of hatred for each other. People don’t even have the vocabulary to define their situation.
They took all the decent history books out of the schools and replaced them with whitewashed versions of history.
So no one knows anything about the labor movements of the 20s and 30s or how they were systematically broken. The propaganda to denigrate them is so successful you can hear working-class people parroting anti-union slogans. It’s just bizarre.
Our political system is so corrupt you can buy a senator. Or a “supreme” court justice. Do you want to buy one? I could probably set that up.
Plus, we don’t have organic candidates for large elections. They are preselected and run through a terrible primary process that most have given up on. Only the extremes participate.
Florida is going to sink under the rising seas. My Dad lives there. I hate going there. Every time I do I am reminded why a fascist like Desatan gets elected. It’s embarrassing.
There are a lot of things wrong here. I knew a Russian guy who came over after the wall fell. He ended up going back to Russia. When I asked why, he said, “ In America, they give you a longer leash and let you bark loudly, but they keep the food out of reach.” I thought that was an apt description for many people here.
There isn’t a floor here, so if you fall down and don’t have family to help, you are pretty much heading for a tent city.
It is supposed to keep us motivated. The fear of that.
Not really the land of the brave.
If people would stand up to the corporations that own everything and fix the situation it would be a great country again. Nope, it’s easier just to blame blacks, Jews, and Mexicans than to change things by standing shoulder to shoulder. Thanks, media!
It’s definitely a country experiencing decay. It was successfully and profoundly divided by unscrupulous people that know exactly what they are doing. You have to literally step back and pull away to realize it.
Not many people do, and if they do the picture is so ugly they just shove their head back into the sand.
America, as it stands now, is a mixture of “1984”, “Brave New World”, and “Fahrenheit 451” rolled into a pseudo-religious culture that forgot Upton Sinclair and Jack London.
It’s a tinderbox where half the population is ready to vote for Hitler 2.0 while pointing at the rest of us saying we’re the fascists. It would be funny if it were a TV series. But it’s a serious situation that doesn’t seem to have a remedy.
I was at a concert last night and I kept looking around while in line to get in. I was worried someone would start shooting. We all feel that way. We all were looking around.
Yay, 2nd Amendment for doing the exact opposite of what it was intended to do.
Capitalism for every single aspect of your life! George Orwell would be so stoked because there’s an abundance of new material here. It could make a writer’s career even though not many people read books here.
The other thing I noticed at the concert, is you can’t use cash anymore. Everything was credit card only. I guess banks own the currency now? Go figure.
It’s weird living here seeing how it has warped over the past 40 years.
As soon as media was “deregulated” the country started going downhill.
The soul of the country has been profoundly damaged by the likes of Tucker Carlson and many others. It’s not limited to the right either. It’s endemic.
I really think this all started with media deregulation.
They literally capitalized our eyeballs and ears.
It’s no wonder it’s an angry country. No one can truly discern the truth unless you poke around in the media of other countries that still have ethics.
There is a segment of the population that will believe anything they see online. Enter Q. It’s mind-boggling. It still blows my mind and I have lived through it. It just feels unreal. But it isn’t.
I know that Europe has dealt with “austerity” and there is a wave of privatization going on in some places. Whatever you do, don’t let them do it. Especially your medicine and Media. You’ll end up being a dilapidated mall like the US. But with fewer guns and prettier scenery.
I really do hope that my country figures things out.
I want to love my country but it’s getting so hard.
Since Iraq, I have lost faith in our leaders to even approximate the truth instead of using PSYOPS on us. I mean I have had special education in the use and detection of propaganda but it was so blatant that I figured a 3 year old could see it.
But nope. I just kept hearing people say we are going to turn Iraq into a parking lot and ‘Support the troops’. Not many people questioned anything.
I had friends serve over there and came back profoundly psychologically wounded. The reality of it was so different than the crap they were fed. It’s just awful for the entire world.
If I were outside the US I would keep a weary eye on us. I am inside and I keep waiting for it to implode.
The right vs left nonsense has gotten so out of control that we could be neighbors but live in a completely different universe.
We have young men going off the rails here. They are being sucked into this toxic version of pseudo-masculinity and commiserating in self-perpetuating chatrooms where misogyny is getting so out of control that I’m wondering if the birth rates are going to go down.
They literally have no social skills and blame the world for that. They have lost any sense of self-responsibility and lack the desire for self-improvement.
The women of this country are taking the brunt of this terrible movement and it makes me sick to my stomach.
It’s so deeply distorted that these kids are going to end up in prison if they don’t get help soon. There’s not much help but plenty of content that will sell you a book on how to pick up girls. Ugh.
When I was younger we had motorcycles and sporty cars. We were rebellious but we weren’t malicious.
Now on the highway, we have these young men in big trucks driving aggressively. It’s not a healthy version of rebellion you would expect from the youth. This is darker and more aggressive. It scares me because that mentality is ripe for the white supremacists and Nazis to exploit.
I was working at a restaurant years ago. I went to take out the trash only to watch two girls get shot.
Apparently, the guys were rebuffed by some women inside. They decided to just open fire on the people standing in line. Those people had nothing to do with the altercation inside.
It’s things like that that keep me from being in large crowds.
It’s just gotten worse since. 340 mass shootings and counting so far this year. It’s only July.
I really don’t know how to fix it. I try to be responsible and talk people off the ledge but there is just so much anger. People are over-sensitive and anxious.
It’s like some strange disease swept the country before anyone knew it was happening. I am not sure that it can be fixed.
At least until people drop the “greatest country on earth” myth and start to say “Hey, maybe we went off the rails over here” and sit down and do the work.
I think that’s why I am writing this.
Hopefully, someone will see it and say “Wow, maybe we could try and fix something together” but I feel like I will get hounded for not being patriotic even though the most patriotic thing that you can do is dissent with love in your heart.
I don’t expect people to understand that. If anyplace it will be on Medium. At least here you can say what you think and find some agreement.
America is filled with great people, we are just suffering at the hands of the not-so-great ones. And it’s been going on for too long.
I’m not even sure if we could muster a political figure that will bring us together. Joe Biden is at least trying but he lacks the charisma. Not sure if anyone has that kind of pull anymore. It’s just sad.’
