This Is the Weak Link in My Writing Process
Maybe it's yours too?
I sit down and start to write.
I stare at that menacing blank page.
An idea pops into my head.
I start to write about it.
Then, I think of some reason as to why I shouldn't write about that.
Maybe it's boring, maybe I'm not qualified to write about it, maybe it's controversial.
Sometimes, I get caught in this dreadful cycle for hours.
The bottleneck
This is the slowest point in my writing process. Also, I wouldn't say I like it the most.
I can quickly develop a story when I have an idea to write about.
But this brainstorming and ideation process is a killer for me. It sucks the energy out of me and makes me want to give up.
Identify your bottleneck
As a writer, you might have a different bottleneck.
But if you can get honest with yourself about your writing process, you'll probably find some point where things are inefficient.
This also might be the way it is.
I could streamline my ideation phase. However, my personality will make part of the brainstorming process painful.
There are likely limits on how much you can streamline your bottleneck.
My work
I'm working on improving this part of my process. I know I'll be able to write better stories faster if I can find a better way to develop ideas.
I'll have to get creative.
Getting creative about being creative (I hope that's not too meta).
As a writer, you probably have some process, whether you know it or not.
You can benefit from becoming conscious of your process and identifying the aspects of it that hold you back.
I'm taking this approach and hoping that it will improve my work.
