Summary

The best way to manage earwax is to leave it alone, as it serves a protective function and the ears are self-cleaning; using Q-tips can be harmful and push wax further into the ear, potentially causing infection.

Abstract

According to the article, the natural production of earwax is beneficial and serves several purposes, including protection and waterproofing of the ear canal. Experts advise against the use of Q-tips for ear cleaning, as they can cause damage to the eardrum and lead to earwax impaction. Instead, it is recommended to clean only the outside of the ear with a wet washcloth or use earwax removal aids like Debrox drops, followed by a warm shower to clear any softened wax. The article emphasizes that the ear canal is sensitive and should not be probed with objects like Q-tips.

Opinions

  • Dr. Erich P. Voigt from NYU Grossman School of Medicine suggests that earwax is a protective coating with anti-microbial properties and that most people do not need to remove it.
  • The article posits that the use of Q-tips for ear cleaning is not advisable, as they can cause more harm than good by potentially damaging the eardrum or pushing wax further into the ear.
  • Dr. Lustig warns that using Q-tips can compact earwax, leading to infections, and emphasizes the sensitivity of the ear canal, recommending against inserting objects into the ear.
  • The author advocates for gentle external cleaning of the ear and the use of earwax removal products, if necessary, to safely manage earwax buildup.

This Is The Best Way To Remove Your Earwax, According To Science

And it’s very simple

I came across this article on Twitter and thought of sharing it with everyone here.

Our body produces many substances and earwax is one of them. Sometimes it can be troublesome to remove earwax.

However, just like other body functions, earwax also serves its purpose

You probably don’t need to clean your earwax anyway

The best way to deal with earwax is just don’t remove it.

Dr. Erich P. Voigt, an associate professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, says:

“Most people do not need to remove their ear wax. It is a protective coating of the ear canal. It is a waterproofing agent and has anti-microbial properties. It helps prevent outer ear infections.”

Earwax works as a protective layer and shields ears from any damage and infection. Also, ears are “self-cleaning” so you don’t need to wash the inside area of your ears.

Dr. Erich further says:

“If Mother Nature designed an ear that had to be cleaned, that would be a poor design. We didn’t have ear cleaners 500,000 years ago.”

Don’t use Q-tips to clean your earwax

We all are familiar with Q-tips:

These are the small cotton swabs and many people use them to clean their ears.

These are some of the drawbacks of using Q-tips:

  1. If you accidentally insert Q-tips too far into your ears, you can damage your eardrum. Q-tips can scratch the eardrum and cause bleeding. So the bottom line is:

Using Q-tips to clean your earwax is not a good idea.

2. Dr. Lustig says, “If you can’t see what you’re doing, you can end up sort of packing all that wax in with Q-tips. A lot of the time it acts as a plunger. When I have someone come in with an earwax infection, half the time it’s because they used Q-tips.” So

Q-tips can push all the wax back into your ear which can cause infection.

This is the safest way to clear earwax

If you want to clean your earwax, just focus on the outside part. Don’t stick anything inside your ear.

You can do the following things:

  1. Clean the outside wax with a wet wash rag or soapy finger.
  2. You can use products like Debrox drops. Just follow the procedure. Lie on your side and put some drops in your ear. Wait for a couple of minutes for the wax to come on the outer side. Then wash your ear with a warm shower.

Dr. Lusting says,

“The ear canal is sensitive and has a lot of nerve endings. A light touch that might feel like a tickle elsewhere can really hurt in the ear. So I wouldn’t go putting things in there.”

So don’t take unnecessary risks while cleaning your ear. Don’t put anything inside your ear. Just clear the outside part of the ears.
