Summary

The article emphasizes the need for new writers on Medium to adapt to recent changes by focusing on quality content and reader engagement rather than follower count and immediate financial returns.

Abstract

The Medium platform is undergoing significant changes that are particularly challenging for new writers. With a shift in the monetization model from claps to reading time, writers are encouraged to think long-term about their craft. The article, contributed by an author who learned of these changes from Joshua Idegbere, outlines the difficulties faced by novices, such as limited exposure, lack of publication opportunities, and inexperience with what content performs well. However, it also offers a perspective of resilience and adaptation, urging new writers to cultivate their skills, produce great content, and not to be disheartened by initial statistics. The message is clear: by becoming a great writer, financial success will follow. Writers are advised to focus on creativity and skill development rather than daily stats, embracing the mindset of a farmer who sows seeds and waits patiently for the harvest.

This is the best time for writers to start thinking like farmers

Alas, a new era has come upon us!

Perilous time has come to writers on Medium!

I learned about it from a friend of mine Joshua Idegbere a few days ago.

It wasn’t so good to the ears.

“Why now?”

Thought about it over and again.

“Who does this change affect the most?”

I discovered it was new writers. I mean those who are just coming to Medium as neophytes.

To them, it shall be really difficult.

Difficult.

First, they’ve got not many followers and so their stories are not going to appear in the feeds of many.

Second, most of them can’t be accepted to new publication because they’ve got no track records yet.

Wow!

Third, a lot of them have not learned enough to know what work is on Medium and what doesn’t.

These challenges, as well as the paralytic progress of their daily stat, is gonna do a lot of harm on their creativity.

So bad.

So wrong a time to be a new writer on Medium!

Isn’t it?

Not really.

Tough times.

Yes, tough times don’t last. It’s tough people that do.

Its gonna be tough. But don’t worry you’re going to outlast it.

As my friend, Joshua Idegbere will always say:

“When faced with challenges, the aim is not to escape the pain, but to survive it.”

Always remember that.

Men and brethren, it’s time to start thinking like farmers.

It’s a new agenda on Medium now.

Claps has been dethroned. It’s now the duration of read that is the new monarch of the economy

Welcome new writers to a new Medium.

The era of clap is over.

“The reads is now where the money is.”

You have to now start thinking like a farmer.

It’s sowing time!

Start sowing.

Start writing great content.

The aim now is not to get great pay but to be a great writer.

Here’s what that means in the long run:

If you become a great writer you’ll get great pay.

  • Learn your craft
  • Develop your skills
  • Read books that teach you the nitty-gritty of this game.

The aim is to have a great track record and a powerful root.

One more thing.

If you’re new in this our community, please stop checking your stats every day.

It’s not going to help you.

Your daily stat is gonna discourage you.

So don’t go there for encouragement.

It won’t help.

This is where your focus should henceforth be:

On your creativity.

To be more creative than you ever have been.

To start becoming a writing machine.

To start thinking and writing on your feet.

That’s where your focus should henceforth be.

I leave you with these apt words

“What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger”.

Together we shall get stronger.

Long live Medium!
