Summary

The web content is a reflective essay and poetry piece discussing the complexities of parting ways in various contexts, from personal relationships to public figures, emphasizing the importance of perspective and growth rather than shame or failure, and it also includes a writing prompt for readers.

Abstract

The article titled "This Is Not A Divorce" is a contemplative piece that uses poetry to explore the theme of separation, not just in romantic relationships but in broader terms such as the public's relationship with child stars and the dissolution of groups, particularly in the context of K-pop. The author, Lucy Dan, reflects on the idea that these splits are not necessarily negative but can represent a divergence in values and the strength found in individuals forging their own paths. The essay criticizes societal pressure on young stars to perform rather than nurture their creativity and craft, suggesting that the shame of their struggles is a reflection on society rather than on the individuals themselves. The piece also serves as a call to action, inviting writers to participate in a writing prompt on the theme of splitting up, encouraging them to share their thoughts through poetry, short stories, or essays.

Opinions

  • The author believes that parting ways, whether in personal relationships or in public figures' careers, should not be viewed with shame but as moments in time that reflect personal growth and differing values.
  • Lucy Dan points out that the public's reaction to the separation of entities, such as the disbandment of groups, is more painful than the actual split.
  • The essay suggests that society has failed child stars by pressuring them to perform for validation rather than allowing them the space to develop their talents healthily.
  • The author admires the longevity of IU's career, attributing it to her talent, hustle, and perhaps the absence of group dynamics that often lead to eventual splits.
  • The writing prompt issued by the author is an invitation to writers to engage with the topic of separation creatively and without stigma, highlighting the importance of open discussion and artistic expression on such themes.

This Is Not A Divorce

a poem (and a writing prompt!)

This is not a divorce, I dare not say I know that feeling.

A split nonetheless like a childhood role model slid downhill amongst the limelight — no.

I find myself wanting to erase the thought above. It is not.

For one, this instance represented a difference of values, neither more correct than another; we saw the fallout but we also saw the strength of each taking on in their own paths.

And then - let’s drop the idea that it’s shameful for these adultified child stars absent the actual support they needed instead showered in dopamine hits and access to wealth before their frontal lobes developed. It is not initially their shame, but rather ours, for allowing an atmosphere that pressured them to be, to overshare, to perform rather than to develop the creativity and craft of what they love.

This is not a divorce, but a moment in time. And it is not the split that hurts, but rather the reaction.

Our reaction. Our choice.

Hi, I’m Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) and sometimes I joke about stanning IU (Lee Ji Eun) because rare for her industry, she debuted as a single human being rather than as a part of a group. While I believe her longevity is related to her talent and hustle, I also think part of it is related to not having to deal with splitting up, which groups inevitably do after ~7 years. 📚📚 PS, I published a book of tiny poems!

Hop down the rabbit hole? 🐰🕳
