This Is How to Raise Human Consciousness
When you do, you finally feel alive.

Raising human consciousness is a bizarre goal.
You won’t read about it in success magazine or on an influencer’s instagram page. When I hear “raise human consciousness” I imagine a group of weirdos around a campfire playing chariots of fire. That’s not what we’re going to talk about. Raising human consciousness transcends everything else, including religion.
The best source of information about raising consciousness comes from Vishen Lakhiani. I discovered Vishen when I met two young blokes in Australia. Both of them worked for Vishen at his startup Mind Valley. Their friendship led me to Vishen’s simplified explanation:
Higher consciousness is energetic awareness that transcends the mind’s normal preoccupation with the past and the future.
Consciousness is typically described by neuroscientists as “a narrative that our brain constructs out of our senses, perceptions, and actions.”
Professor McFadden thinks this description is out of date. “How brain matter becomes aware and manages to think is a mystery that has been pondered by philosophers, theologians, mystics and ordinary people for millennia. I believe this mystery has now been solved, and that consciousness is the experience of nerves plugging into the brain’s self-generated electromagnetic field to drive what we call ‘free will’ and our voluntary actions.”
My version of consciousness is slightly different.
I manifest energy inside of myself that I seek to transfer to others. This energetic awareness, as Vishen describes, takes me out of past and future thinking. This bizarre reality I accidentally stumbled upon helped me heal from mental illness (where I was trapped in past/future thinking).
7 Types of Higher States of Consciousness
I am going to sound like a dummy. I had no idea there are different higher states of consciousness. I thought you are either in a higher state of consciousness or you’re not. I have experienced these higher states of consciousness:
- Optimal experience and the “flow” state
- Euphoria of a runner (runner’s high)
- Near-death experience
- Lucid dreaming
- Mystical experience (sometimes regarded as the highest of all higher states of consciousness)
I am yet to experience the final two states:
- Out-of-body experience
- Modified states of consciousness, achieved with the help of meditative psychotechnics
One person I know has experienced and explained an out-of-body experience to me. It sounded similar to meeting aliens from Mars. Perhaps my level of consciousness isn’t there yet. Modified states of consciousness is another experience I have gone without. Using food or drugs to modify my consciousness is too dangerous. As a teenager I had a bad experience with a puff of weed (it felt like dying on repeat for six hours straight).
These seven higher states of consciousness are worth becoming obsessed with. Each state unlocks a part of your humanity you may not have encountered before, that will help you transcend past and future thinking, therefore, transcending yourself and your minuscule existence.
This Is How You Feel When You Are Experiencing a Higher State of Consciousness
At the higher levels of consciousness, we no longer feel separate — Vishen Lakhiani
I wrote that writing is a transfer of energy from the writer to the reader. This process is when you transcend yourself as a writer. It’s the secret ingredient to every viral (random) piece of content you’ve ever read. It’s not the freaking headline — it’s the energy the creator put into the content.
A higher state of consciousness makes you feel connected. You see everybody around you as part of yourself. You don’t want to take from them. You feel moved to connect with them, for reasons you may never understand.
When I am experiencing a higher state of consciousness my entire life goes from inward to outward. It’s the best feeling in the world, and money can’t buy you higher states of consciousness.
Stay away from these low states of consciousness
- Blaming
- Complaining
- Consuming most news (fear that steals your attention)
Vishen says a low state of consciousness occurs when “we believe we are separate from everything else, alone and vulnerable.” If the world is all about you and your political preferences, injustices, fears, wants, and attention-seeking, then you’re putting yourself in a low state of consciousness. You’re taking every little thing too damn seriously and not zooming out to see the big picture: you are just like them, there is no enemy, people change, you’re not here for long, and your opinion isn’t right or wrong (it just is).
A guy I used to work with is the ultimate example of a low state of consciousness. You could see the dollar signs in his eyes while you spoke with him. Don’t do this: treat everybody like a dollar sign.
Dollars are a concept that sits on the surface of the water. Look beneath the surface and you’ll see a 4th dimension.
This Explains Why Humans Argue
Most humans are in a state of being asleep even when awake [during daylight hours], meaning we are blind to the true nature of existence.
We see what we perceive to be reality, but what we perceive is seen through the unconscious lenses of our past conditioning, which is completely different from that of any other human being. That means that for every single person alive today, there is a different reality, a different truth.
Now do you see why we’re a bunch of Tasmanian Devils blowing up at every little thing? Your daily inputs can never be similar or even the same as another person’s. This reality explains every comments section on every social media post in history.
You’re unconsciously wired to disagree. You can’t help it.
You Don’t Need to Be Awoken — Or Have a Magic Moment of Transformation
The challenge with this whole topic is that it’s out of reach for many. It’s got all too spiritual and woo-woo. Guys and gals wearing t-shirts showing an awakening have cluttered the airwaves of consciousness.
You don’t need to become anything.
You don’t need to wake up. You don’t need to become part of a group of human beings who think everybody else is stupid. I have edited and synthesized Vishen’s ideas into one sentence:
You are simply discovering your true nature and switching on your dormant faculties.
The ability to transcend yourself already lies in your DNA. Everything you need to experience and use higher states of consciousness to change your reality, is already there, and it has been there the entire time. When I discovered this insight for myself, my entire life changed. I stopped living a shallow, unfulfilling, unconscious life. The shift was slow and steady, like life.
How to Raise Human Consciousness
Believe you can
I believe I can raise human consciousness through writing. Many people think I am delusional, but it doesn’t matter to me.
What you believe, becomes reality. Anybody can raise consciousness.
Master and transcend your mind
- Learn to master your thoughts
- Learn to master your emotions
- Learn to master your body
- Learn to master your mind’s desire to wander
Each area of mastery unlocks the keys to higher states of consciousness. Each area requires regular, tiny steps to master. Each area seems insignificant, but when combined, the result is powerful.
Hardwire yourself to the present
This is what mediation is really for — not to become a headspace nerd and brag to people at work about how peaceful you are.
The three-dimensional world is made up of the past, present, and future. You get closer to raising your consciousness, and that of others, when you change the percentage of time you spend in the present. Explore the present more often. See where it takes you.
Stop your ego destroying your consciousness
Your ego tells you to follow your own importance. The key to raising the collective consciousness is to go from selfish to selfless. That’s where your entire life changes. Go beyond yourself is cliche advice most of us have been ignoring since birth.
Channel these uncomfortable traits
- Optimism
- Humility
- Appreciation for what you have
Find a vehicle
Raising consciousness just means adding something back rather than subtracting all the time. My vehicle is writing. You could choose teaching, leading, creative pursuits, volunteering, physical representations (sport).
Putting ideas out into the world is the most powerful vehicle I know to raise consciousness. Why? Chances are, others have had a similar idea as you and will feel connected when they hear yours. And when they hear your idea, you inspire and raise consciousness.
Dare to go big
Connecting people is a powerful force. You can connect two people. Or you can connect the consciousness of thousands of people, the way Coldplay does at a live concert. The size is up to you. But when you play with this force, you may decide to go big. My advice is this: dare to.
Raising human consciousness simply means connecting people to something bigger than yourself. When you do, you stop sleeping through life and start living. Go ahead and try it.
