This is how music with AI-generated elements entered the Grammy Awards

Good day! The Grammy Awards, known as the music industry’s most prestigious accolades, are undergoing a transformation to keep up with the ever-evolving landscape of the music world.

Last month, the Recording Academy, which organizes the Grammy, introduced a series of changes aimed at reflecting the advancements in technology, particularly machine learning.

One particular guideline change has captured the attention of the media and music enthusiasts alike: the requirement for “human creators” to be eligible for the music industry’s highest honor.

According to the new rules, a work that lacks human authorship is not eligible in any Grammy category.

Recording Academy CEO and President, Harvey Mason Jr., shed light on this decision, stating that music containing elements created by artificial intelligence (AI) is still eligible for entry and consideration for a Grammy nomination.

However, he made it clear that the AI portion itself will not receive a Grammy or Grammy nomination.

To understand the specifics, let’s explore different scenarios. If a song features an AI or voice modeling program as the lead vocal, it would be eligible in a songwriting category but not in a performance category.

This distinction arises because the act of performing in this case is not a human creation.

Conversely, if a human artist sings a song in the studio while the lyric or track is written by AI, the composition would not be eligible for a songwriting category.

Mason emphasized that as long as humans contribute in a meaningful way, beyond a minimal amount, they will always be considered for nomination or a win.

The Recording Academy’s intention is not to replace human creativity with technology but rather to ensure that technology enhances, embellishes, or adds value to human creativity.

This stance underscores their commitment to promoting the symbiotic relationship between humans and AI in the music industry.

The Recording Academy’s decision to establish guidelines regarding AI’s role in music was prompted by the rising popularity of songs created alongside AI technology.

Examples include David Guetta’s “Emin-AI-em,” the AI-compositions of TikTok user @ghostwriter977, and Grimes’ voice modeling AI software.

To develop these AI protocols, the Recording Academy conducted extensive research and even organized tech summits.

They also engaged with the copyright office and discussed the future implications of AI at both the federal and legislative levels.

The announcement of the new Grammys AI protocols coincided with Paul McCartney’s revelation that the “last Beatles record” had been composed using artificial intelligence to extract John Lennon’s voice from an old demo.

Mason, however, could not confirm or deny whether this AI-assisted song would be eligible for a Grammy nomination since the extent of the AI’s involvement was not yet known.

Nevertheless, he expressed his belief that certain components of the creation would likely meet the eligibility criteria.

The burning question on everyone’s mind is whether we can expect to see AI-assisted work receive Grammys nominations as early as next year.

While it’s impossible to predict the future submissions, Mason acknowledges that technology is being utilized extensively in the industry.

He anticipates that many records and songs this year will incorporate AI in some capacity, which may result in several submissions being considered for nomination.

Looking ahead, the 2024 Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena.

The event will be broadcast live on CBS and available for livestreaming on Paramount+.
