I always wanted to write a viral article. This is the only way to build your audience. Before my viral article, I had written more than 50 articles but did not get any success.

When I was writing this article, I never thought I would get this many views. I wrote the article in less than 30 minutes thinking that I will get the same view as before (15–20 views).

However, I was wrong. When I woke up the next morning, my medium profile was flooded with notifications. I could not realize what was happening.

So I clicked on the article and saw that it had been distributed by the curators. I got so many views in the next couple of days that I could not believe what was happening.

Internal views matters

There are two kinds of views on Medium

1. Internal views — if the medium members read your stories, then it counts as internal views.
2. External views — if people who don’t have a medium subscription read your stories, then it counts as external views.

Medium only pays for internal views. For example, I got 82% internal views on the story, and that’s why I was able to make so much money.

Reading time matters

This is also an important point when the medium decides to pay you money. Higher reading time means more money. The reading time for my story is 3 minutes and I got a total reading time of 147 hrs.

Highlights and comments on your article matter

If members comment on your articles and highlight a part of your story, then it increases the chance of earning more money.
