MEDIUM PROGRESS UPDATE | JUSTINWRITES
This Is How Far I’ve Come On Medium In Three Weeks
Consistency and finding your audience are what matters
I am documenting my journey as a new writer on Medium. Check out my first article in this series to catch up!
When I started writing on Medium three weeks ago I had a 5 step plan. Something I have come to realize is that plans should be fluid and you need to be able to adapt.
You’re here for the numbers so let's cut the fluff and get into them and we will talk about how they pertain to my plan.
The Numbers
This is a snapshot of my first three weeks:

So here are my takeaways as it pertains to my five-step plan:
1. The views stayed low until I submitted to publishers
My first six articles barely moved the needle.
Originally in my plan, I said I was going to write and throw the words out there and hope they stick. I had planned on self-publishing and not worrying about publishers in order to get the rhythm of writing down.
I decided on story number seven that I would start submitting to publications. Submitting and being accepted by publications such as Illumination, Coffee Times, Hello Love, A parent is born, and my favourite Midform, all helped me move the needle.
My work started being seen by people who wouldn’t normally view my work.

2. Followers picked up when I engaged
As I wrote in my top article “I Want You To Unfollow Me.” I did not engage in follow-for-follow behaviour.
I want real engaged followers that enjoy interacting with my work. I realize that people following me hoping for a reciprocal follow is something I can’t control. But I am doing everything I can to discourage that kind of behaviour.
I started the journey with around 85 followers from when I used to write. Most are inactive accounts from years ago and I can’t make them unfollow me.
I had the +139 follower jump from a few sources:
- Writing engaging articles that related to people
- Engaging with content that is similar to mine
By seeking out content that is similar to my own I have found writers and other readers that are already interested in what I am talking about. When I engage with them, they check my work out, and if they like it they stick around.
I generally am making a point to engage with 30–50 articles per day. It is not fake engagement either. I make sure it is articles I am interested in.

3. The money still doesn’t matter but it’s encouraging
I have made $7.41 so far in my writing.
This is obviously not a life-changing amount of income but I have a few takeaways from it.
- I didn’t set out to make earning part of my goal. In my writing, I qualified for the partner program pretty early and joined it. The money is a nice by-product but it isn’t my focus right now.
- Seeing which articles earned, helped me know what niches I should venture into. Some of the results surprised me.
- It surprised me to see that my parenting and life lesson articles earned almost as much as my business, making money, and listicles.
Where do I go from here?
I am going to continue on my writing path but I am going to start taking posting more seriously.
When I picked up in consistency and made a point to engage, my following and influence followed.
Originally I mentioned I would write once a day which I clearly did not. I am going to change this and start writing daily.
I am still not going to focus on making money but on putting out quality content consistently.
I am going to use the stats to develop what my niche is further and to get a gauge on what readers are connecting with.
It has been an interesting journey so far and I am going to continue to update my journey once per week on Saturdays.
