This is Everyone’s First Time
Give yourself the amazing gift of learning
During a time of many challenges, usually someone in our organization or household has experienced a similar event before.
Not this time- no one has any experience with a pandemic like what we are experiencing.
This makes our past less reliable to base our actions on.
This should give us pause in how quick we jump to conclusions. We need to take in more insights and listen to more people.
We will need to try things that we may not have considered before.
When it everyone’s first time, no one is an expert.
Lesson to Learn
When no one is an expert, everyone has something valuable to contribute.
This is generally true, but even more so when it is new to everyone.
Listen more closely to what and why people believe what they do.
We are all going through this for the first time — which means we all have a lot to learn.
It also means we can be better prepared for the next pandemic. And, one thing we can most certainly know is, this will not be the last pandemic we will experience.
Let’s learn together how to best move through this challenge.
Answer for Me
I like to move quickly.
I like to get answers and then develop solutions. This time is different.
I need to be more thoughtful and do a lot more listening.
We all must develop the answer together. No experts to turn to.
We will need to figure it out together.
Action
Be more collaborative. Seek lots of different opinions.
Try things with an eye toward learning quickly.
Acknowledge that no one has the answers so we will need to develop the answers as we go along.
Daily Habit
Start each day reminding yourself that no one has been here before.
Be humble enough to learn new things everyday.
Look for answers that make sense for now — realizing it may need to change tomorrow and in the days ahead.
