This is AI why regulations must be done right

S.1993 — A bill to waive immunity under section 230 of the Communications Act of 1934 for claims and charges related to generative artificial intelligence.

In June 2023, Senators Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) and Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.) put forth a bill to strip generative AI products of Section 230 protections.

What are Section 230 protections?

Section 230 promotes free speech by removing strong incentives for platforms to limit what we can say and do online. Before Section 230, companies cultivating online communities were legally responsible for what their users posted, while those that exercised no editorial control were not.

This is why a proposal like this is anti-artificial intelligence (AI) technology and anti-American innovation.

“This effort smacks of culture-war-driven technophobia, not clear-eyed policy-making. These irrational fears would retard American economic growth and technological innovation.”

“The catastrophist perspective has manifested itself in legislative proposals such as Senators Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) and Richard Blumenthal’s (D., Conn.) bill to strip generative AI products of Section 230 protections. In it, the senators aim to create legal carve-outs and special liabilities that categorically disadvantage AI products — not just the nascent supercomputer overlords.”

David McGarry, policy analyst at the Taxpayers Protection Alliance

At a time when strong evidence points to our government promoting China by pushing green energy and electric vehicles, bills such as this will only give the Chinese government more power over American innovation.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the U.S. digital economy accounted for

· $3.7 trillion of gross output

· $2.4 trillion of added value, equalling 10.3 percent of U.S. gross domestic

product (GDP).

· $1.2 trillion in compensation through eight million jobs.

According to McGarry, the stifling of such productivity (through regulations like S.1993) would “atrophy” the tech sector (AI and otherwise) productivity.

A recent Goldman Sachs report says generative AI “could drive a 7% (or almost $7 trillion) increase in global GDP and lift productivity growth by 1.5 percentage points over a 10-year period.”

The report concluded that enacting laws discouraging American innovation would undermine U.S. firms competing with foreign firms (like China), end U.S. dominance in global technology, and make American consumers poorer.

If S.1993 became law, digital tools like Grammarly, Vimeo, and smartphone cameras would be impacted.

Shoshana Weissmann of R Street Institue says,

“Because it’s impossible to know if content will be used in illegal ways, it’s unclear how these companies could comply with the law without removing all AI features from their products. The resulting deluge of lawsuits could bring AI development in the United States to a grinding halt.”

According to Senator Hawley’s press release,

“This new bipartisan legislation would clarify that Section 230 immunity will not apply to claims based on generative AI, ensuring consumers have the tools they need to protect themselves from harmful content produced by the latest advancements in AI technology.”

His reason sounds logical, but was any thought given to the economic impact or innovative stagnation the passing of this bill would cause?

I have to say the answer is no, they did not.

How it impacts everyday people

Innovation flows when it is free of regulatory red tape and restrictions. McGarry points out the difference between America’s global tech-sector dominance versus Europe’s heavily regulated tech-sector stagnation.

Government regulations are the necessary evil of evil-minded people willing to take advantage of someone else’s innovation for their financial gain.

This is why regulation within the cryptoverse (which the tech sector is included) must be done right. Otherwise, America will lose its ability to aid developing countries in a digital world.

My cryptoverse writing focuses on empowering everyday people, and challene them to find financial freedom through the cryptoverse.

This story is a suggestion to help you along the journey.

My story, Everyday people: you gotta have a plan, offers some suggestions. My over 500 stories will guide you and give you ideas to embrace the change and transform your life.

Although the cryptoverse is not the end-all, cure-all, it is a simple investment tool that everyday people can utilize.

I am committed to the cryptoverse, and believe it offers a path to help you change-possibily find financial freedom.

Investing in any of the various segments of the cryptoverse (Currency, DeFi, gaming, NFT, Metaverse, AI, or Web3) can provide you the opportunity for financial freedom, but it takes a plan.

Disclaimer: I am not a financial planner, and therefore do not offer financial advice. I am an avid student of the cryptoverse who is willing to make the things I learn available to everyday people willing to take a chance, change, and explore your financial freedom in the cryptoverse.
