30 Second AI Solutions

This AI turns trending comics into entirely new original strips for you

How to easily recreate existing comics with Comic Copycat GPT

Part of my 30-Second AI Solutions series.

Short guides, big impact.

One thing that gets my goat is seeing cartoons my friends or I have made being recirculated online without attribution. Pirated images can rack up hundreds of thousands of likes and shares, especially on Facebook reels.

The question I ask is why they didn’t just generate something original? At least a variation on the idea. Especially now that it’s so easy now to create images. And I admit, sometimes I see a cartoon and go “Man, I should’ve come up with that. It was a diamond joke, lying right there in the open!”

Well now you can put your own unique spin on a comic in seconds! All it takes is the starter image, a ChatGPT subscription, and my Custom GPT.

Here’s one I prepared earlier:

Inspired by Liz Climo and generated by the author using Comic Copycat GPT.

It’s a fun idea with a relatable concept. I fixed the font using Comic Life 3, but everything, including the script, was provided by Comic Copycat GPT.

Here’s the original. As you can see, the custom GPT put a new spin on it:

How easy is Comic Copycat Custom GPT to use?

I designed it, so it couldn’t be easier. Using Comic Copycat Custom GPT is a breeze. You’ve got a comic that tickles your fancy? Upload it. Want to tweak the punchline or give it a topical twist? Just say the word. It’s your sandbox.

You get to decide how hands-on you want to be with the creative process. For those in a rush, it’s as easy as upload, click, and bam! A new comic.

If you can’t wait to get started, hop onboard and try it here:

Will my new cartoon be too similar to the source material?

Not necessarily! That’s the best thing. My Comic Copycat GPT analyzes why something is funny in the first place, and goes for an interpretation of the situations and relatable comedy. So new output can be quite different.

Here’s another example to demonstrate. The original:

Became this:

Inspired by Christian Talbot/Sophie Hodge and generated by the author using Comic Copycat GPT.

And this:

Became this:

Inspired by Cho Hon Lam and generated by the author using Comic Copycat GPT.

Same energy, different punchline, with new characters and a unique style. The result? A comic that echoes the original’s spirit but tells its own story.

Tips: Improving the spelling in speech-bubbles

Given that Dall-E 3 is only just getting the hang of text in images, you might encounter some quirky spellings in the speech-bubbles. But fret not! Comic Copycat GPT will provide a transcript of the text. If it doesn’t, just click on the image to open the info pane. You can read the full prompt and dialogue there, then polish the speech-bubbles with tools like Canva or Comic Life 3:

Speaking of revealing prompts…

Easter Egg

Prompt engineers love poking around in others’ custom instructions, sometimes for fun and to learn from them, but occasionally to steal. So now that ChatGPT is letting us monetize custom GPTs in the marketplace, it’s become more important than ever to safeguard our prompts. So I came up with a safety mechanism that does it in good humor: any attempt to pry into the instructions from my custom GPT results in a funny image instead.

It’s my little easter egg! Try it out for yourself — each one is an original toon!

And speaking of giving credit to human creators…

Wait, is it okay to repurpose comics using AI?

You love a comic, and you want to play with the concept. Cool. But never forget that behind every comic is a creator — maybe even someone who relies on their art for their livelihood. Credit where credit is due, folks.

Always credit the original artist, and remember, the goal is to add to the comedic conversation, not just repeat it. Use my Comic Copycat Custom GPT to celebrate creativity, not overshadow it. You can use my template:

Inspired by [insert artist’s name] and generated by [your name] using Comic Copycat GPT

That way you can acknowledge what first tickled your funny bone. Yes, we’re reshaping existing works, but isn’t that the essence of creativity? Jokes are meant to be retold, retooled, and reshared by the telling.

The Punchline: Is Comic Copycat Custom GPT for You?

If you’re someone who loves to laugh, plays with ideas, who sees a joke and thinks, “I can add my own twist to this,” then Comic Copycat Custom GPT is your new best friend. It’s like having a spread of Sunday funnies. Whether you’re spicing up your Medium articles or sharing laughs online, Comic Copycat Custom GPT is your go-to for creative comic-making in a flash:

Be sure to tag me or drop a link if it helps you to add some laughs to your Medium articles, or if you share comics online. I’d love to see your toons!

What do you think? Are you ready to give my Comic Copycat GPT a whirl? How would you put your own spin on your favorite comic? Share your thoughts, and let’s keep this conversation (and the chuckles) going!
