This Could Be the Reason Your Articles Are Not Performing Well
Well, the game is all about ‘Followers vs Fans’.
Medium is free and open for all. That’s why it has become a supermarket of content where thousands of posts are published every single day. Resultantly, the supply of the content has exceeded the demand, leaving a lot of well-written stories craving for exposure. While on the flip side, unaware of all the odds, some writers are making in 4 or 5 figures every month.
Ever wondered what makes them different from the rest?
Is it because they write better and more consistently than others?
Of course, they do write well but we can’t deny that there are many ‘unlucky’ writers who produce equally good content.
So, is their marketing game better than you?
No, I think if you share a link to your post on all of your social media handles including FB groups and email list, you are doing this part right.
The majority of people think the below factors are all they need to take care of.
- Niche
- Original voice
- Consistency
- Marketing
But that’s the half-truth. The complete truth is that the factors we think have the most effect, are not THAT powerful.
Don’t get me wrong. The above factors do matter. However, these are all on everybody’s checklist. Keep them checked and you might be able to create a successful post.
But, is that enough?
I guess not. Every single story must be written in a way that does not only get you views but also indirectly supports your past and future stories as well.
You have to consider every tiny factor before writing a post to make it work. Your readers might enjoy the post and leave a compliment in the comments. But this still doesn’t guarantee that they will get back to you the next time on their own. Even most of your followers will scroll over if the title of your next post is not that extra-ordinary.
You need your readers to keep coming back. So why not give them something they crave for?
Top writers know how to engage their followers. How to leave them wanting more and waiting for their next post. And, now you know what sets them apart.
Okay! but how do they do it?
They actually have a different approach to present the information. Let me explain. While most of us choose to teach our audience, top writers just motivate their tribe. Because they know people don’t wanna learn, they might have already know what you are going to teach them. They don’t tell their reader what to do. They just show what they have done.
You can’t make people read something that they have already read multiple times before unless it brings them some sort of motivation.
Readers are looking for a proven roadmap or confirmation. when you tell them that you have made something they dream of making, they will read you thoroughly and engage with your posts regularly.
What happens when you make this small tweak in your posts
- Readers show more engagement and will get addicted to your content.
- They might follow you to catch up with your future posts.
- Your words will sound more confident and hence improving the overall quality of the post.
I am a big fan of August Birch’s writing and hardly miss any of his posts. It’s not that he comes up with a perfect post idea every time. Not at all. In fact, almost all of his articles are focused on encouraging people to build their own email lists. He repeats the same thing in 90% of his posts.
But I think he knows how to get people addicted and keep coming back. And he does it by motivating them and making his readers feel supercharged and encouraged to take action. This is what makes him stand out.
How to do it
If not yours, refer to someone else’s experience you know. Tell them the steps you took to lose some pounds within a certain time period. tell them what were obstacles in your way and how did you tackle them all. Don’t forget to mention how good you felt as you were in the process and inching towards your goal.
Similarly, readers will love your piece if you write how did you make extra few hundred dollars last month rather than how to make extra money this month.
The goal is to make your readers confident not to give them information alone. The happier they are at the end of the post, the more they will crave for your content.
I have also experienced the same. One of my posts about my experience on Medium got the response that I had never expected. It was not that much though, however, that post surprisingly performed better than many regular posts at that time. Here is the link if you wanna check out.
Conclusion
Medium is highly crowded now than ever. The volume of posts being published in a day is increasing with each passing day. Writers who started at the right time and have built an empire by now, are unarguably on the greener side. My advice to the rest of us is to be consistent and pay attention to what’s working for them.
The readers we get on Medium are the writers themselves. These readers will take no time in clicking away if your posts are not unique or of good quality. So work harder on your content. That’s all that matters most at the end of the day. Find new ideas to write your content. If you can’t come up with something new, at least share the same knowledge with a fresh perspective.
Thanks for reading till the end. Have a nice day.
