“He had been instructed only in that innocent and ineffectual way in which… the pupil is never educated to the degree of consciousness, but only to the degree of trust and reverence.” Henry David Thoreau

We have a problem in the world today, well many problems, but most of them stem from the same source.

No one thinks anymore.

There are a couple of reasons for this, one is we are angry and emotional, and the other is we don’t know how to think.

We are becoming more isolated and alienated from each other and seek to fight those we don’t agree with. This is born from our feelings of hopelessness and despair in our own lives. We think that by attacking what we perceive to be the problem (other people) we will solve the real problem (our lives). When we take a step back and think about that it obviously doesn’t make sense.

That leads to the second problem, we don’t know how to think logically or objectively. We are never taught how to think or analyze the things we see and hear. We are taught how to follow a religion or belief system or tradition, and we accept that as reality.

However, those ways of viewing and evaluating the world limit our understanding and perspective.

If we are going to learn and experience life to the fullest we have to be able to think for ourselves. Rather than allow dogma or society to dictate how we think and feel. That means learning about different ideas and also turning off the computer and spending some time in the real world.

“Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or self-confidence.” Robert Frost

The next time you get upset or offended and want to lash out or attack, take a second to think.

It’s not always easy, sometimes we have to wait to calm down before we can look at something objectively. But when we do we can learn more about ourselves and life in general.

That doesn’t mean we have to agree with everyone, but we don’t have to hate everyone either.
