Think of Yourself as a Beautiful Tree

I am writing this from the front room in my fathers house. There are two large windows in front of me, overlooking the lawn. At the end of the lawn there are two trees that I can see. Their leaves glisten in the gentle wind. They are firmly rooted in the soil. They are welcoming me in. Into stillness.

In this essay I invite you to think of yourself, as a tree.

Trees are dynamic, yet stationary.

Trees are always growing. They are either in a state of growth or a state of decay. The same could be said for ourselves. If we’re not growing and becoming better versions of ourself then we are decaying and losing our edge. We need to be constantly learning new things so that we are in a state of positive growth. And like a tree, you can be dynamic while staying put. Pick up an e-book, or learn an instrument, or a second language. These are all things you can learn and grow with, in the safety and comfort of your own home.

Trees know when to let go.

How many of us have problems letting go of people, places, or things? We hold on to situations that no longer serve us, whether it be a job, or a relationship. Trees know the seasons of life, and when to let go. Spend some time with yourself and see if there are some things in your life that you need to let go of.

Trees need sunlight and water and room for their roots to grow.

Isn’t it fascinating? Trees survive primarily off of sunlight and water, as well as needing room for their roots to go. Water and sunlight are probably the two most important aspects of being human as well. But not everybody drinks water, or gets adequate sunlight. We need to put down the soda and sugary drinks and pick up a bottle of water. And get outside and catch some sun. The sunshine is healing and therapeutic.

Also, trees need room for their roots to grow. If they don’t have enough room for their roots they won’t grow to the full potential. The same could be said for you and I, we need space and room for ourselves to grow. It’s important that their is a place where we can find solace and recharge whether it be a bedroom, or a closet,

Trees go through periods of vibrant expression, with their branches reaching towards the sky.

Have you ever noticed a tree that just made you stop in your tracks, and stare in awe? Trees know how to just be. They are completely themselves. They don’t try to emulate other trees. Every tree is different. Just like you and I. We are all unique. There are no two that are the same. If you look, you will see, one has branches here, the other there. And the same goes for people, no two are the same. You are just as vibrant, and just as wonderful, as that beautiful tree.

Trees go through periods of shedding and purging themselves, letting their leaves fall to the ground.

We can’t have continuous growth without a shedding or purging of ourselves. We have to let go and give up things in order to create space for new things to come in. For trees this occurs in the winter. For us as people, we can do this anytime. Go through your clothing and give away what you don’t use. Get rid of negative and toxic relationships. Simply let them go.

Trees are space for birds and squirrels to live, grow, and play.

Just like trees create space for other animals, we as humans can use our creative endeavors as opportunities to provide space for other people to live, learn, grow, and play. Whether through a personal business, or a creative pursuit like an album or novel, we can create space for others.

They stand at attention, saying: I Am Alive.

Trees are alive. There is no doubt about it. And yet, we can’t see them move. We would need a camera to document their growth, and yet, it’s right before our very eyes. As long as the tree is alive we can hear its whisper to us, encouraging us to step into life. Take a deep breath. Say to yourself: I Am Alive.

You can sense the aliveness in a tree. It radiates life.

You are filled with that same life force that fills the tree. The same wonder that you have when you see a miraculous tree, give that same wonder, to yourself. You are a miracle. You are vibrant. You are a blessing. You are Alive.

The tree isn’t thinking, it is being.

We spend too much time thinking, and not enough time being. If we would spend more time in being, we would feel our own aliveness. The tree just is. It simply is what it is, where it is. And there is freedom in that. Freedom to stop thinking and be yourself.

I encourage you to practice being with yourself today. And radiate just like a beautiful tree.
