Things You Didn’t Know About Social Media
Does it help to have a bunch of followers?

Almost all of us engage in social media in some way. Why do we do it? Is there any benefit to it? Years ago I read that social media is first and foremost a business. While I appreciate keeping in touch with friends via social media, for me it’s also an advertising arm for my writing. I did a little research on social media and put together some thoughts on it.
I’m most active on Twitter.
I have about 26,000 followers. I post links to my Medium stories on Twitter throughout the day. I think it helps my numbers. I’m just not sure how much.
I did a little research on Twitter and found the average Twitter account has 707 followers. So, you know what par for Twitter is. Of course, it’s not just the number of Twitter followers you have, it’s what they are interested in.
Most of my Twitter followers have a sports connection. Unfortunately for me, that’s not a huge help with my Medium account. Most are not Medium members.
But beyond business, when there is breaking news, I check with Twitter. Twitter may not be the most accurate news source, but they are, in my opinion, the quickest.
Hey, when it comes to news, what do you want, accuracy or speed?
Linkedin has proven to be generally, ineffective for me.
I’ve heard of people getting work from Linkedin, but generally, what I get are solicitations from people who want to build a website for me, do my accounting, or take care of my insurance needs.
I understand people soliciting for business. It’s just a matter of doing due diligence. I do generate the occasional read from Linkedin.
Linkedin’s purpose is to connect the world’s professionals. It’s amazing how few of the world’s professionals are looking for jokes and cartoons.
While I haven’t done any good making money on Facebook, my wife has.
I enjoy reading posts from friends and others on Facebook, but it hasn’t been a moneymaker for me. It really doesn’t generate a lot of reads on Medium for me.
My wife has had some success in selling home decor on Facebook. It would seem that Facebook is more effective when actual goods are involved in marketing.
I wish I could make more effective use of Facebook. Twitter is used by 23% of Americans, whereas 71% use Facebook and 18% use Instagram
It would be nice to concentrate on writing alone, I’m not sure it’s practical.
As I’ve said before, writing is enjoyable. Promoting your writing is work. Maybe I can get to the point where promotion isn’t an issue. I’m just not there yet.
