Things That Go Bump in the Dark

October Six Word Photo Story Challenge: Scary

Eerie light, bats in the night.

I took this shot back in the early days of learning photography. I was struck by the light of a full moon trying to shine through a foggy, cloudy night and how that made for a great silhouette of the tree.

It was cold and windy out, not comfortable at all. My nose was running. My hands were cold. The filtered light from the moon was odd and unsettling. And I was already uncomfortable with the fact that I barely knew what I was doing with this camera.

I was concentrating so much on making sure I had the right settings (I was still a beginner and fumbling around in the dark with my tripod and trying not to make newbie errors like pointing my headlamp at someone, blinding them) that when I actually took the photo, I had no idea until I looked at it later, that a bat had made its way into the frame. That made up for all the discomfort. It was a delightfully spooky capture!
