Things I Learned About Health And Healing The Hard Way

It was three years ago. Little did I know at that time, that my life was about to change. A lot. At that time, my father was very sick. He had a tumor inside his colon that needed to be operated. It was a very challenging time for me and my family.
When my father came back home after the operation, I started to research vigorously on how to heal the body. So, I could help restore my father back to health.
My research into this subject led me to learn about how the body heals itself and its marvelous mechanism. I unearthed a lot of things that I initially didn’t intend to. So, much so that I now have a big fat red file full of my research notes.
The knowledge I gained and all the things I implemented as a result of it would be a lot of information for just one article. However, below are some very interesting lessons I learned through my journey.
1. A Disease Is A Spiritual Disconnection.
I never thought health and spirituality could be related. However, I have learned that we are first and foremost spiritual beings. That is who we are at our core. We are spiritual beings having human experiences. Therefore, all of us by default have a connection to the source. The source may be anything we believe in — God, higher power, the universe or energy. When this connection to the source is misaligned, emotional problems begin to build up in our lives. Over the course of months and years, finally, the emotional problems (stress) manifest into physical problems.
In the book “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay, she lists all the diseases a human body can suffer from and lists the probable emotional causes that created the disease in the first place. In the very next column, she mentions a counter positive affirmation that would reverse the disease if believed wholeheartedly. Therefore, to keep good health, we first need to maintain a strong connection to a higher power that we believe in. A strong connection could be established and maintained through any ritual that makes you feel closer and connected to the source. It could be praying or meditating or reading spiritual books or could be anything unique to you.
2. The Body Heals Itself Given the Right Circumstances.
The human body is a marvelous mechanism. I have learned that given the right circumstances it can heal itself. The right circumstance for the body is to keep the body in an alkaline state. When the reverse is true and the body is in an acidic state, it creates inflammation. And inflammation is what causes a dis-ease in the body resulting in disease. To keep the body in an alkaline state, we need to eat foods that are high in pH. The higher the pH, the more oxygen it carries to the body.
Another thing I came to realize is that — it is best to have alkaline food than alkaline water. This is because the stomach has HCL (Hydrochloric Acid) which helps in digestion of the food we eat. When we drink alkaline water, it dilutes the HCL in the stomach which is not the desired result we want. We want to keep the body alkaline but the stomach acidic.
3. You Have to Believe in Your Heart That You Can Heal Yourself.
The way we think plays a big role in our body’s ability to heal itself. Healing the body from any illness quickly and a negative thinking pattern doesn’t go hand in hand. When the mind is thinking negatively and is in distress, the body produces a hormone called cortisol. A high cortisol level in the body suppresses the immune system. The elevated cortisol then signals the body to stay in a ‘fight or flight’ mode to stay alert in case a negative experience happens. Thus, the different functionalities of the body slow down.
The more positive you stay, the less cortisol the body produces. The less cortisol the body produces, the different functionalities of the body starts working better. As a result, the body heals faster.
4. 80% of Our Immunity System is Our Gut.
Our gut consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, and rectum. It does some of the most important functions of the body. It transports and digests the food we eat, absorbs the nutrients and is responsible for the elimination process.
I learned that the digestion process starts in the mouth. When we eat food, the teeth break down the food and then it is mixed with saliva which contains digestive enzymes that begin the digestion. Hence, to help this process, we should chew one mouthful an average of about twenty times. Then, the food is passed to the stomach through the esophagus where it gets further broken down using the Hydrochloric Acid. At this step, we mustn’t drink a lot of water while eating food because the HCL gets diluted and it interferes with the digestion process. When the food reaches the small intestine, the nutrients are absorbed into the body and then the waste is eliminated through the colon. These two small steps might appear insignificant, yet can greatly enhance the digestion process and the absorption of the nutrients.
The gut is also the home of the ‘microbiome’ and it consists of billions of both good and bad bacteria. When the proportion of these bacteria is in a balanced state, the microbiome helps the body to fight diseases and keep the body in a healthy state. However, an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut leads to diseases in the body. So, we need to keep the microbiome balanced by eating gut-friendly foods like high-fiber vegetables and probiotics.
5. The Body Require Proper Nutrients to Thrive.
The body is a living organism and to thrive it needs live enzymes. The live enzymes come from fresh fruits and vegetables. The more we consume the live enzymes in raw form as salads and cold-pressed juices, the better the body heals itself and remains healthy.
Among all the different types of diet I came across, the rainbow diet is the one which the body loves the most. The diet name is quite self-explanatory — it consists of all the rainbow-colored fruits and vegetables. Each color provides different sets of nutrients. These nutrients help to keep the body in an alkaline state and reduce inflammation.
- The red-colored ones like tomatoes, watermelon, and apples contain lycopene helpful for heart health and cellular rejuvenation.
- The orange-colored ones like carrots and pumpkins contain beta-carotene helpful for maintaining eye and skin health.
- The yellow-colored ones like papayas and lemons contain vitamin C helpful for detoxifying the body and repair all the body’s tissues.
- The green-colored ones like spinach, watercress, coriander, and broccoli contain chlorophyll, folate, zeaxanthin, and lutein helpful for blood production and building a stronger immune system.
- The blue and purple ones like eggplant, grapes, blueberries contain anthocyanins helpful for destroying free radicals.
Conclusion:
Sometimes the body just needs a little help from us. Sometimes a little faith, good eating habits, and proper nutrition go a long way.
