It wasn’t easy to determine the cause of her symptoms. Clara’s recent fever couldn’t reveal whether she had had COVID-19 or the flu.

The coroner didn’t understand the order for the autopsy, but her family insisted on it. The doctors relied on it. Even the township waited on the news.

Citizens were dropping like flies. A flutter of deaths knocked the afflicted down one by one. No pandemic had stumped the world quite like this.

Was it a new strain?

Or were the dead the victims of their own demise, scared by a world that was headed for ruin?
