They killed their daughters due to dire financial constraints
A Tragic Tale of Desperation
In a heartbreaking incident that has incited shock and bewilderment across Punjab - India, a couple, victims of extreme poverty, resorted to a heinous crime — the murder of their own children.
The Unfolding of the Gruesome Incident

On October 3, 2023, the Punjab Police arrested a couple who, under the strain of severe financial constraints, poisoned their three daughters aged nine, seven, and four. The couple, daily wage labourers and migrant workers, hid the lifeless bodies of their children in a trunk in their house.
According to the Police, the couple mixed pesticide into the milk of their daughters on a Sunday. In the horrifying aftermath, they concealed their lifeless bodies in a trunk within their home. The couple, who are reported to be migrant labourers, has two more surviving children.
The Investigation and Discovery
The tragic event came to light when the parents lodged a missing report for their daughters. The police grew suspicious upon noticing discrepancies and gaps in the couple’s statement.
The subsequent investigation, which involved reviewing CCTV footage, revealed a chilling fact. It was discovered that the girls hadn’t left their house as claimed by their parents. This led to a house search by the police where they made the grisly discovery — the bodies of the three daughters concealed in a trunk.
The Shocking Confession and Arrest
Upon further interrogation, the parents confessed to the heinous crime, attributing their act to their inability to financially support their children. The couple was arrested and charged under Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (tampering with evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.
The Aftermath and Questions Raised
The case has sent shockwaves through the region and beyond, raising serious questions about the state of social security measures for economically vulnerable sections of society. It underscores the critical need for systemic changes to prevent such desperate measures from gaining ground.
This harrowing incident shines an unwelcome spotlight on the dire conditions faced by economic migrants and highlights the urgent need for social reforms.
